Good information but I'm mad at batteries right now. My 7 year old deep cycle battery split open like a dry log last week. It was kept charged or so I thought, and was paralleled with another one.

Just froze and cracked. The other one, same age, is fine. Can't fiqure it out-maybe a cell shorted out and the acid turned to water.
They've never been off the boat -at 92 lbs. a piece, they weren't about to be taken off either

Looks like one cell shorted and discharged itself. When they discharge, most of the sulferic acid is absorbed by the plates, leaving almost pure water to freeze and break the case. Sad, but stuff happens. They other one may still be going strong after another 7 years.

At 7 years old you got your money's worth out of it anyhow!

Discharged batteries will freeze. They can self discharge when idle.A small solar panel will keep the batteries charged during winter.A 90 cent hydrometer and monthly checks will keep this from happening again.
