We have a Delta 4''belt6" pedestal mounted disc sander at work . It's about ten or twelve years old. It is driven by a cogged belt on cogged pulleys. The one on the motor is made of plastic and is worn out. All attempts to order a new pulley from Delta/Dewalt get this reply,"That part is no longer available" When I point out that with out the drive pulley I have a nonfunctional sander Delta simply shrugs and has no anwer . I will appearantly be in the market for a new sander but probably not Delta/Dewalt. Porter Cable has always been high on my list of good tools but they are now owned by Dewalt. Feel free to make your recomendations for a replacement and thanks for listening. I feel better.

mjbrown//A bearings belts & chains company can help they need belt & pulley .It,s called a timing belt i just replaced one on a old fork lift. I think they measure center to center on belt cog number of cogs plus with. Then you need pulley id and od.

You mention Delta/Dewalt. I thought Dewalt was part of Black and Decker. Is Delta tied to them also?

Some years ago, Dewalt bought the tooling and machinery to make the Black & Decker "professional" line from B&D and renamed it so people wouldn't realize they were getting the same old B&D junk with a different color scheme. They have since bought up other makers and redesigned many of the "old" B&D tools so the B&D connection is hardy recognizable anymore.

Well, no.

Black and Decker bought DeWalt back in 1960.

In the late 80's the idea of making a higher end power tool under the DeWalt name came about. And by the early 90's, the trademark yellow DeWalt power tools and accessories were in production and on the market.

The main difference between them and their more conventional B&D counterparts was in the gear metals and the handle shapes.

Many of them were made over my head on the assembly line of the Hampstead facility where I worked in the power tool accessory product test lab.

Okey dokey--sounds like you've got better info than I was given. Got mine from a B&D dealer, so I had no reason to doubt him, but it sounds like it may have gotten garbled a bit in translation. I understood Dewalt to be a separte entity from B&D, but it sounds like it's the same ownership.

Their website shows Dewalt owning Delta and Porter Cable. I thought P-C was owned by Milwakee but not any more I guess. Too bad.

I was reading a Consumer Reports magazine several months ago and checking battery ratings. It was interesting how one companys batteries differed in performance. For instance, XYZ batteries gold top rated the best in the world. Their silver top rated very poor. Guess I just don't understand.

You should be able to order a new pulley from Graingers or McMaster Carr. Lots of places sell those cogged pulleys. Should be easy to get somthing that will work. Just need the shaft diameter and the pulley diameter.

Why can't you change both pulleys to V belt.
That's what I have on my sander.
Mine is a Delta. Made sometime in the '30s.

Often that is called a timing belt. Do a Google search for timing belt pulleys. You might get lucky and find an equivalent part.

I have one exactly like it on my workbench that I use a lot. Just replaced the bearings on the drive roller; my sprockets are good. Lowe's has a Chinese copy look-alike Delta bench sander, but obviously the parts aren't interchangeable. My buddy bought a Ryobi bench sander the same size and seems to be satisfied with it.

I bbought a Delta Compound miter saw several years ago. I does the job, but noit as solid as I"d like. Adjustments aren"t smooth either. Still it will do good work with a little care, but I wish I"d spent more money & got something better. I bought an old used Walker-Turner 10" tilting table saw for $50 at a swap meet years ago. It"s the best saw I ever used, accurate & repeatable. MAN IS IT HEAVY-- Took two of us to get it up a stairs. Great Quality.

Take a look at JET. It's my understanding that a guy who used be one of the "higher ups" at Delta got upset with the way things were going there, so he started/joined JET years ago. They appear to have the quality Delta once had.

Thanks, I just checked their website and their sanders look pretty buff. Obviously they are a higher quality tool than the one I refered to (at a higher price). Spending restrictions at the time I bought the Delta restricted my choice of quality. I think I can now point out the false economy of going cheap to the bean counters and up grade.

mjbrown,
I haven't bought any major tools in a while, but am ready to replace my worn-out 30 yr old Craftsman router and 35 yr old Craftsman 12" radial saw (saw motor burned out, "no longer available". Router still runs, but the adjustment mechanism can't be trusted.) In the past, I've always felt Delta made the best stationary tools (I love my Unisaw & Drill Press) and that Milwaukee the best hand-helds (Circular Saw, drills, Sawzall). Now, I'm reading horror-stories about Delta. Did their quality go to pot due to a buy-out/merger? How about Milwaukee? I know it depends a lot on the particular tool, but I'm just asking about their quality in general. Looking forward to hearing testimonials in reply to mjbrown's post about the sander.

The UNISAW you mentioned I think was the best that was ever made by WALKER/TURNER of NEW JERSEY which I think was merged up by DELTA and they continued the manufacture of it.We had all WALKER-TURNER power/tools in school wood working classes.CENTAUR

I have a Walker-Turner drill press and bench grinder I have been using for 45 years. No Problem! They are also labeled Rockwell, or a division of Rockwell. Good tools. Heavier than I like to move.
