Should I buy some new tools?

Had a little extra income come my way. Debating what to spend it on. Somebody said that the Kobalt tools sold by Lowes are actually made by Snap On. Are they the same quality?

Somebody stole my S-K sockets about 15 years ago; I replaced them with various non-brand tools that have stood up okay. Just thinking about buying a full set of Kobalt - - BUT: I'm probably getting too old to do much mechanic work anymore so probably don't really need new sockets. But the money's in the bank.

Decisions; decisions...

Kobalt tools were never made by Snap On. At one time, they were mae by JH Williams which is owned by Snap On. I have a set of Kobalt Williams made wrenches and, while they are excellent, they clearly are not the same as Snap On. Lowes actually got into some hot water due to employees telling customers that Kobalt was the same as Snap On but just cheaper.

Several years ago, Lowes switched the contract for wrenches, sockets and ratchets to Danaher instead of JH Williams. The current Kobalr wrenches look exactly like the Allen line that is also made by Danaher. The rest of the Kobalt line is now Taiwan and China imports.

I have more tools than I can ever use, but I still like buying more. About the only way I buy anymore tools now, is just if they are so cheap, I cannot turn them down. A few weeks ago, a guy at a flea market had 6 Proto wrenches, all bigger than 1 inch, 10 bucks for all of them.. No way could I turn that down.. The suggestion below, about silver or gold is a good one. Sometimes, if I just want to spend a little money, I will buy a few silver rounds or pre-1965 coins... Fun to buy something, but really, I am making an investment. BTW, at today's silver prices, the pre-65 silver coins are worth over 8 times face value, just for the silver content..

If you needed the tools you would of had them by now. Take the money and buy yourself a oz. or two of gold or several oz. of silver at your local coin shop. Then sit back and watch your "extra" money work for you. Tools are nice, but it sounds like you really don't need them. Good look.

If it pleases you go ahead and buy them. Take a look at the ones that have the sizes etched in big bold font so the old eyes can see the size markings a lot easier.

I have tools at both son's homes, a full set in the basement, another in the garage and a set in both vehicles. At my age I really like not having to walk very far to get a tool.

i don't like kobalt wrenches. the wrench heads are on backwards.

i also never thought of checking out used tools on ebay!

Yeah it's better to keep the money or invest in something better than tools. If you really want some good name brand tools again check auctions for estate sales, yellow pages for used tool places, military surplus or pawn shops for a better buy. You'll find much better quality older made tools at those places than the cheap China junk most chain stores sell. Another surplus one to check is online but even their inventory is getting lower on the good oldie tools.

Stick the money in the bank. Better to spend it on something you really NEED later, than on something you WANT now. I got a price yesterday on a Thermal Dynamics SL-100 hand plasma torch with the ATC adapter, which I NEED now, $428.00 + tax. Now I need to wait a couple weeks to raise the money. Had I not bought a couple of other tools last week that I WANTED (but needed, just not that badly), I'd have the money for the thing I NEED now.

If you don't need them , put your money in the bank...Tools don't appreciate..New tools today , get sold for half price tomorrow...Just my 2 cents worth...I'm tool poor , Tools at the township garage , tools at my pole barn , tools in my service truck....Just bought a 36 mm socket off the Snap-On truck on wednesday , almost 40 bucks..... ..
