does anybody here make their own bio-diesel. I was thinking about buying the rig to do it but couldn't find anybody to give up there cooking oil. bars, fast food, etc. etc. all are set up with a couple different protein companies that bring the new oil and suck out the old.

I've been doing it for 30 years - with waste deep-fry oil, waste motor oil, etc. But, it's getting scarce for many reasons. Some places are charging 30-50 cents a gallon for it now. There is also a bio-diesel refinery that opened up 75 miles from me and they buy some of the waste oil.
And, seems many people new to it - like to get in the newspapers and talk about what they're doing. Then more people try it, they all start going around asking for it - and a good deal gets ruined. But in regard to some of the posts and comments aout warranties, etc. It depends on what the oil is - and if it's NEW virgin oil, or used cooking oil - i.e. WVO. Some of the bio-fuel blends being sold do not void any warranties and have more lube than #2 diesel. But, from what I've seen -those fuels aren't cheap. If you're going to use WVO, you don't need to buy a prefab. kit - it's not that complicated. But, you have to filter it - and you need a way to preheat it - especially in the winter. And, just like an old John Deere all-fuel tractor - you have to remember to switch back to straight diesel before shutting down if you're using WVO - or you might not get the engine started again.

A while back a guy on here was complaining that Cummins wouldn't warranty his fuel injection system because he was running bio-diesel. Another guy posted that Ford wouldn't warranty their's either.
Neither one had reason to lie that I know of. As for me, my new Cummins won't get any bio-diesel until I can verify that the warranty won't be jeopardized.

Saw a post on here a few months back. Some guy was hoppin mad because Cummins wouldn't warranty his injector system because he used bio-diesel. Another guy came on and said that Ford won't either. Don't know if it's true or not, but don't think either of them had cause to lie about it.

I know there won't be any bio-diesel in my new Dodge Cummins.

You're not passing through Minnesota then? :)

2% mandated in all disel fuel....

I thought all manufaturers allow 5% or so, most 20%.

The problems are if there is poor quality, it can jell up.

The advantages are with the new fuel, 2% or more bio will lube the older fuel pumps.

Our FFA chapter makes a few hundred gallons a year. We go around and pick up local resteraunts used vegetable oil (which they are glad to get rid of otherwise they have to pay to have it disposed). We then sell the bio-diesel to our school and they runs it in the old diesel snow plow truck. Can't remember for sure but I think we bought our system out of Sully, IA; something like Azure Biodiesel maybe.

What kind of problems are you seeing with ulsd? I haven't noticed anything on my Dodge yet.

I read that some school buses in Pensylvania were gelling because of the ulsd. One school was called off for a couple of days because of this. A neighbor's new Powerstroke jelled a couple of weeks ago and he's a careful farmer who is very familiar with year-round diesel use. I suspect it was the ulsd. Jim

I read about that school system too. Turns out they had bought the fuel in the summer and it wasn't winter mix. Any diesel fuel would gel under those circumstances. If they had dumped a little kerosene in the storage tanks, there wouldn't have been any problems. I've driven about 10,000 miles on ulsd since last fall, and haven't noticed any difference except that maybe it smokes a little less. The old timer in me still adds a little bit of Marvel Mystery Oil to every tankful though.

I've thought about it too, and also worry about the availability of used oil. Before you buy a store-bought system, check out this website: Link
