Starter Draining Battery?

Does anybody know how you can run a test to see if a starter is running down the battery in a car? I have a '79 F-350 Ford. Replaced voltage regulator, it was bad. New battery, new battery wires, and alternator output is fine under a load and everything. Still, the battery keeps draining. So, I was told that the starter might be draining the battery. Any thoughts or pointers?

Brad

Can't imagine a "ford type" starter circuit draining a battery, but I have seen a delco (with mounted solenoid) starter on a JD 4020 24v start/ charge with 12v lights and accessories drain a battery. Chased that problem for days, almost weeks, could not accept the possibility of the starter drawing the battery down, but replaced everything else (which I hate to do) before a new starter fixed the problem. My experience.

Near the alternator is a connection for the wiring harness going from the wiring system to the alternator itself. This round looking connector often gets corrosion inside it and causes a very mild short. It will not show up on a systems test however. Pull the connector apart and check for green corrosion. If present, clean very well and coat the terminals and surfaces with dielectric grease. Lacking such grease, use any good grade of grease you can get easily.

I have fixed 1 truck and one car with the symptoms you describe by checking, cleaning and regreasing this connector.

The standard way to find leaks is to disconnect the ground wire from the battery, then hook up a voltmeter in series between the negative terminal of the battery and ground. Start pulling fuses and disconnecting wires; when the voltage at the meter drops down to zero, then you have disconnected everything that is draining the battery.

The problem with newer vehicles is deciding what is supposed to be draining the battery (alternator, computer(s), digital clocks, radios, etc.) and what shouldn't be draining the battery (glove box lamps and trunk lamps, for example). With a '79, you might have a chance, since there's not much in the way of electronics.
