OT - $1000 for stove pipe??!

I went to get some 8" double-wall stove pipe for my new house. I picked out the flue cap (screened), storm collar, flashing, 2 48" straight sections, 2 30 degree offsets and one spacer. I needed a couple more shorter sections but they were out. Anyway, they rang me up for over $1,000! Said it was DurAlum and should last forever. Holy cow, does that sound high to you guys? Where is a good place to buy this stuff without getting smoked?

wow that was expensive. i just did my chimney with 6" galva-temp double insulated pipe. this was a complete threw the roof chimney. all for $450.00. you gotta stay away from the fire place stores. they all quote me double the price. i went threw northern wholesale heating & cooling in MI. about 4 years ago for my garage they gave me my 8" stainless shiny outer chimney pipe for dirt cheap also. i did that chimney for under $500 bucks. it was the last of their 8" stainless shiny pipe. they just wanted it gone and now they only stock the stainless inner-galvanize outer stuff due to cost and demand. so the garage chimney is shiney & prettyier than my house one. theese guys hooked me up good. i think i paid $62 for 3ft of insulated pipe. this was all selkirk-metelbesto pipe. this is my 4th night with my new stove and chimney.

I think you were buying UL listed insulated chimney pipe rather than stove pipe. It's required by code which basically means they charge a fortune for it. It should prevent burning your house down though. That's worth something. Dave

after 25 years i had to replace mine i got my son inlaw who works at a sheet metal shop to make mine. he used stainless for inside pipe and galvanize for out side pipe it worked out real well.

in 2001 I put in a new lopi wood stove, the stove was $1200 and the pipe inside and through the roof was $900. (not cheap huh)

Fraid so, I put 28' of triple wall up three years ago and it was about $600. Check online places, it might be cheaper.

About 10 years ago I added a chimney to the house so I could put wood boiler in the basement. When I saw the cost of the double-walled stove pipe - on the order of $800 to $1000 if I remember correcty - I went to the trouble to put up a masonary (chimney block) chimney instead.

So ... I guest that is about what it is going to cost.

My son and I put up a masonary block chimney for about 300.00.18 feet.It replaced an old chimney.This was for a kitchen cookstove.I have found that covering up a masonary chimney with sheet rock walls is the worst thing you can do.It makes the chimney run cold and dirty.The new chimney has been in use for 4 months and has no build up at all.The old chimney was boxed in and plugged up often.My shop chimney is 40 years old and has never gave a problem with plugging up.It was not covered up.Chimneys built out side a building are worthless when used for wood stoves.A friend who cleaned chimneys found some with ice plugging them.He had an oil furnance burner rigged to melt the ice out of frozen outside chimneys.Green sugar maple will plug a chimney,dont use it.I sold stainless chimney pipe and wood burning stoves during the 70s oil shortage.My last 100 gallons of fuel cost 228.00.This amount of oil cost 15.00 40 years ago.There is a shortage of propane in Maine now.One company that makes snow plows had to shut down because of the shortage.

I put up 8 ft of 6" selkirk / metalbestos with the band clip style pro system. Also a cathedral ceiling kit and metal roof lashing kit and cap. Came to about 500$ Cdn + tax.

Flashing kit not lashing. That was the biggest rip off, 120$ for a flashing kit that priced out at 40$ online.
