I'm on Cingular network and some phones use a sim card. I had an old phone with one and could test identical flea market phones by inserting my card and battery and making a call. If they worked OK I'd get a spare phone for $1 or 2. They all have since died and I can no longer find that model.

Meanwhile Cingular kept telling me to upgrade my sim card for better service (?), but the new card won't work in my old phone. So they gave me a new bottom line phone which I don't like. To upgrade, I'd have to sign a new 1 or 2 year contract and pay at least $50 for a new phone.

Today's phones have 75% more features than I need, and being thrifty, I'm looking for a newer used model. Going to Consumer Reports for Jan. '06, I'm useing their recommendation to find a phone. On eBay, I find several that are "locked" and "unlocking services" that charge $10/up to unlock. What is meant by a "locked" cell phone? Isn't it the sim card that's activated and not the actual phone?

Why not? Thousands of them are sold every day on the 'net, at flea markets, yard sales and thru local newspapers. A lot less chance of getting stuck than buying a used car or truck. Of course if one doesn't care about 50-75% savings then new is the way to go.

Like Bill said, if you're still using a TDMA phone, you'll soon be SOL. The good news is that unlocked GSM phones are readily available, so you should be able to get another spare phone for cheap.

A "locked" phone is one that has been programmed so it will only work on one service provider's network. If you use your SIM card on a phone that's been locked to a different provider, it won't work.

Cingular was/is changing their technology from TDMA to 3G UMTS technology. The TDMA network is to be shut down--in Kansas City--any day now, if it hasn't been done already. They forced me to upgrade my phone. I wasn't really happy about that, but I played the game.

Also, Cingular is rebranding to AT&T as we speak.

Yes, the chip in my new phone is marked 3G and it's 64K. Will we soon see chips that are 128K or more?

The old phone chip is not marked and is 32K. I believe the phone is TDMA and that's why they no longer want it used.

My son used to work for a cinular dealer, and tells me that message is standard, and that your old card will continue to work, just wont provide some of the advanced features.
