My neighbor runs the tool dept.@ the local Home Depot. I'm looking at buying the Ridgid 14.4 volt cordless drill , but he's telling me the Makita's Lithium Ion Battery is far superior, but doesn't know the details of why it is better. Can someone give me the story on those type batteries ?

I think I just got the same model. The colors make it look like a sneaker. My only complaint is the chuck, The small ribs will burn your hand real fast if you let it slip while tightening the chuck. IMHO they should have been much larger ridges or bumps rather than the fine ones.

As to the batteries alot has to do with the electronics in the battery and the charger.

I purchased another Makita because my 9.6 volt is still going after 14 plus years.

Lithium Ion batteries are the hot lash from what I'm told. They are lighter in weight, last longer, but cost more. If converting to lithium, not only do you pay for the batteries, you have to buy a new charger. The price of this makes you buy a new tool to upgrade. A 18 volt Milwaukee (old) is good for 2000 charges, the lithium 4000. I've heard that the reason batteries as a whole don't last, is from heat. The larger the battery the more heat it produces during discharge and charging. It was said to me that a 9.6 will out last a 14.4 or 18, because the 18 produces more heat than a 9.6 while charge/discharge. I'm not talking run time, this has to do with battery life, when the battery gives up and you pitch it. The lithiums run cooler. This is what I've heard, so don't shoot the messenger. I've got three, 9.6 Makitas, the oldest being 1993. It made more sence to buy a new tool, (case, tool, charger, batteries) than to buy a new battery for the price. I did buy a couple of batteries also, through the years. My 18 volt Milwaukee kit (hammer-drill, cir. saw, sawzall, flashlight, radio) batteries lasted two years, almost to the day. The lithium kit (two batteries and charger) to convert is close to $300.00, so I waited all this time for it to come out, just to find out I couldn't afford it. If all a person needed was a drill, the $19.99 on sale "CHEAPY" brand, with a 720 day ,"over the counter" exchange or your money back for a 18 volt tool does'nt look so embarrasing any more.

I bought two new Milwaukee V18 batteries and a charger off ebay for $177 plus shipping. I needed a new charger anyway so it didn't cost much more than buying two regular batteries and a charger but I have to say that so far the lithium ion batteries are just as good as they claim.

I have been installing cabinets for the better part or 20 years and have tried most of the cordless tools on the market. Makita is heads and shoulders above the rest, and the new lithium batteries are by far the best. They last me on average of two years each and that is with DAILY professional use (hundreds of discharge and charges), not just occasional weekend use. They use high quality components, yes they cost more, but you get what you pay for.
