I teach technology ed in a small school in Wisconsin. I originally purcahsed a Shop Vac brand vac from the local farm store and it burned up in about a year and a half. That was 1/26 of last year. I bought a new vac (same place, bit different model) and it burned up today. The vacs were cheap enough, but the idea of replacing it yearly is in my opinion, crap.

What in your opinion is the best currently available vac? I realize everyone has the model that has been around since Shep was a pup, but I can't buy that one anymore. What is the best of those that are out there now.

P.S. Non-residential warranty is only 90 days, that says something.

I think Dayton makes commercial quality shop vacs and dust collectors for factory applications. Last for a long time.

Ultimately I suppose a Fein would be the right choice, but I am hoping for something that I can get bags etc for locally (and for less than 14 bucks a piece). Does anyone know if the Ridgid lifetime warranty is good on their vacs? Does anyone have any experience getting anything replaced with the Ridgid warranty?

In the late 90's, I bought a Shop-Vac (Brand) Vacuum for our machine shop. Top of the line Stainless one. It cost around 600 dollars. It would not even pick up dust off a floor. I called Shop-Vac, to see about getting it fixed or replaced. Although it was new, I was told that I had to ship it back to them, at my expense. They would then give me an estimate on how much it would cost to fix. I never did send it, why waste money on a pile of junk??? Shop-Vac warranty is not worth anything..

I bought the biggest one Lowes had (Shop Vac). I hate it. Plus it's big and bulky. I'll go back to Sears for my next one because I liked it OK. Buy the most powerfull you can get or afford and keep in mind some are real loud. See if they list a db sound level if this is an issue for you.

Hi Ryan. I am not trying to be a smart a$$ here but, how about making it a project for your students? Central vac, remote hookups, just like most cabinet shops have. Get the kids ideas let them put their ideas into drawings and then let them put their ideas to work. Funding is probably an issue but even if those kids went to the drafting table and designed a system that would be something wouldnt it?

We actually already have a dust collection system set up for the stationary tools. The shop vac gets used a lot for miscellaneous garbage and metal shavings and chips. Not something I want mixed in with the sawdust.

Maybe one for cleaning furnaces, not ducts, from a HVAC supply house, or a Greenlee user by electricans for sucking strings in conduit. They will cost about four times more and last ten to twenty times longer.

The shop I work in went through vacs like yours at about the same rate as you only ten or twenty at a time,we switched to Fein vacs, can't kill them even some four years old still going strong, expensive, but cost-effective over the long haul.

I have both a 16 Gal. Shop Vac[trade name] and a Rigid 10 gal Vac.. Can't say I would recommemd either for every day constant use such as they wuold recieve in a "Tech School" environment such as yours. You get what you pay for or so says "Confucious" Try the "Snap On" Or MAC Tools Truck Operators. They would have a good recommendation I'm sure. John
