I am looking for an anti-virus program I can recommend to a few friends.. Not Norton I have seen how it hogs clock cycles and wants to own the computer. Reason I am asking is I don"t use any anti-virus software and have no experience with what is currently available.

I am careful enough that it has never been a problem but have a few friends I feel would be better off with something protecting their computer other than the owners common sense. Anyone out there that really knows the different packages and has any recommendations for something small, fast and doesn"t want/need to own the computer it"s installed on?

I used to run Avast because it was free. Alot of the computer geeks like it for some reason. I got a trojan virus and Avast was able to detect it, but could not kill it. I switched to Panda and it found it and killed it completely before it was even completely installed. I liked it so much I paid for it, been using it ever since.

Another AVG and spybot user here. Set AVG up to do the auto updates. Only bad side of AVG, if on dial up (14k average), sometimes the update downloads take awhile. HTH....don t. .....

I fought Norton and McAfee for years - tried AVG and it's great! Don't know if it's still free to new users or not but when my free year was up I kicked in the *$48* for another 2 YEARS! Do the math - and it's MUCH better than anything I *EVER* used from Norton or McAfee!
Back it up with Spybot - also free and you're almost bullet proof!

This is AVG:

You won't be disappointed in these two!

I hear good things about AVG. I have had bad experiences with Norton and a couple others.

I use Panda. Been on line since 1994 and have tried a lot of them. Once you get it set up, everything works great. Updates daily if needed....deadeye

Another vote for AVG here. It's free, it works, and it's not nearly as invasive/clumsy/clunky as Norton.

AVG gets my vote. I use it, and it works. It's also free. I've had problems with Norton.
