Im looking for a truck to pull a 12-16' trailer
with equipment part time, im looking at the Ford line but would consider any others. 1.Does a 3/4 have larger brakes than a 1/2 ton or do you have to go up to 1 ton for more brakes.

2.How does the truck series match then size? I know a F150 is a 1/2t, is a F250 a 3/4? What about Dodge & Chevy series?

I was ordering a new 3/4 ton truck once, and
telling the dealer all the options I wanted on it
to beef it up and he said, "Why don't you get a one ton, all of these options are standard on the
one ton."

I guess I am new to this thread but maybe I can offer some suggestions if I have a little more info.

How much weight do you plan on pulling?

What type of terrain ? Flatland, hills etc.

What distance do you plan on hauling?

And, how often?

If your thinking of the Chevy line, you might want to look at the comparable GMC version. Personally, I've had better luck w/GMC vs Chevy. HTH.....good luck.....don t. .....

Just my 2 cents worth, but have run Ford, Chevy, and Dodge in the past. The best truck I ever had for towing trailers was considered a half ton, it was a 66 Chevy short wheel base step side. Was originally a military truck, with military suspension and gearing including Detroit locker rear end. Lost it when my barn burned down. Current production, would like to have a GM diesel with the Allison trans. I have a 2001 2500 Chevy 4x4 with the 6.0 gas. Makes 15+ mpg no load, cut that in half pulling either my 24 ft livestock or 20 ft flatbed gooseneck. Friend of mine has the Duramax diesel, makes better mileage loaded than mine empty. Previous PU was a 95 Ford 250 4x4 Powerstroke. Front suspension was my biggest gripe with that truck. Put a loaded trailer on it and back up and see how the front wheels are cocked. It made 17+ empty, about 10 loaded.
Low budget, if you can find one not rusted out, would be one of the GM 6.2 or 6.5 diesel. I still have a 1987 with the 6.2, made 22+ on highway empty, 13+ loaded, but everything is rusted out including frame mounting brackets. Dodge, I had a 84 1/2 ton 4x4. Made around 13 MPG loaded or empty, but at that time only pulled 16 ft or smaller bumper hitch trailers. Current production, would love to have one with a Cummins diesel. Automatic trans are the weak point on these, but a GOOD trans shop can modify that.

A 3/4 ton is better however a few years ago Ford brochures claimed 1/2 tons had greater towing capacity than 3/4 tons. Go figure? A 3/4 ton is heavier with larger wheels and brakes and drive train. It helps you stop much better as well as handle better. You still need brakes on the trailer though. Dave

I have an F-250 Ford with a 5.4 and an automatic and I tow a 10,000 lb trailer with it almost everyday in the summer. It works great. Much heavier truck than an F-150. Heavier everwhere including brakes and cooling. I think its a good choice.

third party image

My brother has a regular cab 4wd Chevy 1500 with the 5.3 and an automatic while I have a Dodge 2500 4x4 diesel with an automatic. For occassional towing a half ton truck will work okay but it's kind of like sending a boy to do a man's job. The 3/4 ton trucks will have much better brakes, heavier suspension plus the drivetrain will handle the extra load better. I've pulled a 12,000lb trailer with my brothers half ton truck and it had plenty of power but it would get pushed around by that heavy of a trailer. If you will be hauling equipment for short distances once or twice a month a half ton truck will get the job done but if you will be hauling equipment once or twice a week for any distance at all I'd go for a 3/4 ton truck and a gooseneck trailer.

On a Dodge, the 2500 (3/4 ton) and 3500 (1 ton) are very similar with the exception of the overload springs on the 1 ton, and about twice the truck of the 1500 (1/2 ton). Bigger everything. And available with the Cummins diesel, which, to me, is mandatory for towing. Newer models (2003 and up?) came with 4-wheel disc brakes.

If you only tow part time, consider a used truck a size bigger than you think you need. Keep the one you have now to drive empty.

Ford is the #1 choice....the F_250 is a much heavier truck than the F150....the F150 has the car like chasis....the F-250 has flooting rear axles, a heavier chasis, frame, wheels and tires and larger brakes....now the F-350 is a 1 ton and heaver yet and offers dual rear wheels for stubility.....The Super Duty F-450 is a real HOSS..... be careful of salesmen some don't have any idea what you need but will talk like they do.....

Can't say on fords but on the older chevs the brakes are bigger on the 3/4 ton and even the master cylinder is bigger.

you can also get the F150 with the 8200GVW package which gives you the same tow/haul ratings as the basic F250. You can also get F250 in 3 different haul/tow ratings, etc.

Hi folks. A 3/4 ton or better is best like maybe a 3/4 ton Dodge 4x4 v10. If you want economy get a car.
