gas pump filter

I have an old visible gas pump that is gravity flow. I have used it about 10 years for lawn mowers, motorcycles, etc. I recently started getting trash in the fuel. I bought a goldenrod fuel filter and installed it and it won,t flow fuel unless I have the glass tank over 1/2 full. The filter is mounted at the bottom of the tank. I guess there isn't enough gravity pressure with only a gallon or so fuel in the pump glass tank. If I get a pipe and put the filter down about 3' below the glass tank, would this increase the pressure on the filter. Only 3/4" for 3' isn't much fuel weight, but was thinking the height of that gallon of fuel above the filter might cause a large increase in pressure. Will it work or wishful thinking?

That's NOT correct.

A foot of WATER column exerts .433 PSI at the bottom, and gasoline is something like 25% LESS dense than water.

So, a 3-foot column of GASOLINE would exert about 1.73 PSI at it's bottom (the filter).

(ROUGH figures... corrections welcome, if I'm wrong.)

If I fumbled through the right buttons on my calculator, .433 X 3ft = 1.29 psi of water column, - 25% for a lighter liquid like gasoline would be .974 psi at 3 ft below the liquid level in the glass tank. Unless the filter is very tight, that pressure should flow gasoline through it at a reasonable rate ???

That type of fuel filter is designed for pressure flow and the gravity probably doesn't have enough force to flow through it.

We used those specific "Goldenrod" filters for YEARS on gravity-flow gas AND diesel 300 and 500 gallon tanks with NO problems, whatever.

I think if he does drop it a bit, his last gallon or two of gas will flow through the filter better.

Dropping the filter 3' should have the same effect as RAISING the level of the gas 3' by filling the glass tank on the pump.

....use a piece of old panti hose on end of hose.....

can you put the filter on the pipe coming into the glass.....after the hand pump.....

..... better yet sell me the pump..... ..Don

Thanks, I'm gona drop that filter about 3'. I just didn't know how much pressure difference there would be in the bottom of a column of fluid 3/4" diameter than one 12" diameter both being 3' high. Actually the glass is high enough I could drop that filter about 5'.

The pressure increase per ft of drop is exactly the same for any size tube, 3/4 inch or 12 inch makes no difference in pressure. The lower you mount the filter below the fluid level, the more pressure you have to force fluid through the filter.
