Garage door opener plastic gear

My Sears garage door openers have a worm (ceramic) and gear (plastic) drive to a chain. The plastic gear keeps wearing out every few years. There is grease you put on the new gears. Anyone know if a steel or other material gear is available?

The balance springs are extension type, not wind up therefore I cannot change the tension and the tension is not bad as you can easily lift the doors.

Thanks for any ideas!

Search Ebay for "41A2817 gear".

I got 2 gear only kits for $20 shipped.

Remove the cover every couple of years and regrease with mobil 1 synthetic grease and the gear wear goes away. The set I replaced in my old 1/2 hp Chamberlin still look like new after 10 years of a Mobil 1 synthetic grease relube every two years.

Where do you get Mobil 1 synthetic grease?

Not at NAPA or O'Reilly's. Suggestions?

Sears sells a ton of these replacement gear sets. Here in Milwaukee they don't even stock them in the back room. They are right out on the floor at the parts store. Girl behind the counter says they sell an awful lot of them. The opener I had to replace them on is about 12 years old. The new openers sold in the store today use the same set-up.

Just redid mine,a TruGaurd(Liftmaster,Chamberlain etc).Kit from here was like 38$ w/shipping,both gears,bits& pieces.
Extension springs ARE usually "adjustable" by repositioning the tag end of the pulley cable,so spring is tighter or looser.

I got on the net, and I "think" it's Wayne - Dalton, has built these openers forever, with very little change. I ordered a new gear, put it in, and made sure the tracks were lined up and greased. That was 10 years ago.

After the second time my plastic gear broke I bolted a fender washer to the side of the gear with small stove bolts. Hasn't bothered since.

Oh boy, been there done that. I rebuilt a couple of those at work...now I can do it with my eyes shut. I asked a garage door specialist, and he said you have to keep that well-greased. The grease that came with the gear was just a petroleum jelly type stuff. I'd imagine any old grease would work. Atleast we both know, don't buy a garage door opener with a drive sysyem like that : ) Good luck.
