Impact Wrench Torque?

I have a Campbell Hausfeld impact wrench that my wife gave me for Christmas a few years ago. She got it as part of a set of tools. The rest of the set performs ok. The impact wrench is way short of power. I can torque a lugnut to 100 ft lbs and it will not remove it. I am not sure what the torque rating for the wrench is, but it is way too low. I am looking to get another one and am trying to find out how high a rating that I need. I have looked at several with a rating from 380 to 600 ft lbs. I work mostly on auto"s. I know the top limit is only governed by the checkbook. What do you use and is it satisfactory?

I looked up the specs on my Campbell Hausfeld TL1002. It is rated at 230 ft lb. I use a 3/8" I.D. hose 50 ft long through 2 quick connects. I have a compressor that "develops" 5 horsepower with a 30 gallon tank. The shut off pressure is 125 psi. I realize there is a fair amount of pressure drop through the quick connects. However when checking things out some time back, I ran a hose direct out of the tank to the gun without any quick connects and it still was unsatisfactory. I am thinking of a new one with at least 500 ft lb rating.

A small compressor will do the job for a short burst. The wrench just needs a lot of air, meaning 3/8 hose and the shut off valve on the tank needs to have a big enough hole in it to feed the hose enough air. Pressure is fairly important too but not as important as CfM's. Jim

Gotta disagree with you Jim, pressure is atleast equally as important as flow volume.

Many smaller/cheaper compressors can flow 10cfm at 40psig but that won`t do the job. Pressure relates to the force generated, flow relates to how long the force can be generated. Small compressors can keep the pressure AND flow high enough.

True, but some guns hame more efficient use of the air. I can remove and all the lugnuts off of a 1 ton truck wheel with my "earthquake" running off of a 30lb propane tank filled to 125 psi with air.

Don't overlook your hose size...most of my air tools will perform nominally on my 1/4" coily hose,but gotta use a 3/8 hose on the 1/2" impact.
Someday I gotta buy a 3/8"coily" :)

The common thread that I can surmise in this topic is that the air supply to the wrench was insufficient. Impact wrenches use alot of air and a small compressor will not keep the pressure high enough at the required volume to do any work. I proved this to my neighbor who borrowed my CP734 and couldn`t bust a few lug nuts with it. He then went and bought the IR 2131 or whichever was the first to produce 600 foot pounds of torque and still couldn`t do it. Once he brought the machine over here and I hooked my wimpy little 450 lb wrench to a decent compressor he saw the light.

I had the same issues with a cheap 1/2 inch air impact. I got n "Earthquake" brand one from HF($70), love it. Better be careful though, after being used to the weak ones you will wring off a few if not careful.

My truck's lug nuts are torqued to 135 lb./ft., and my Dewalt electric has no trouble taking them off.

I had a cheap pneumatic one that won't loosen a lug nut. I bought a HF electric one for $39.00 and it works great

Had old one and replaced with 380. Would not perform at any comparison. Took it back to wally world and continue to use old one. Would pro bably buy the highest torque available like 600. Save your receipt. Cars are tough, need all the help you can get.

have you oiled it i use marvel mystrey oil a little in thev air inlet hole every once in a wile makes a diffrence you do need a good volume of air supply ,
