O/T 85' Chevy S-10 with 2.8 carburated. RESULTS

Well this morning I hooked up a long section of vacuum hose on the EGR valve and ran it into the cab and hooked it to my Mityvac hand vacuum pump. I had Brad drive (motor ran good). Every time I put vacuum on the valve regardless of engine speed or load, it would die out just like the problem it had. So I topped off the fuel tank with Sunoco ultra 93 and a bottle of Cristy drygas and left the vacuum hose to the EGR valve plugged off. Brad drove it back to college tonight (47 miles of hill and dale 2 lane highway). He called to let us know he got there ok and said the Blazer ran perfect the whole way.
I'm suspecting a problem with the valve itself or the thermal control for it. But with a 22 year old vehicle, if it runs good with out it I'll leave it unhooked. Thanks everyone who jumped in with suggestions on this.

Back in the early days of emmisions controls, unhooking the EGR and plugging the vacuum line was one of the first things you did when trying to make a new car run like it should. It made a huge difference. Don't know if that can still be done with the computerized management systems on todays vehicles.

I guess I'm lucky on this vehicle, it's one of the last to be built without computerized engine management. But then all the emissions controls are mechanical as evidenced by all the vacuum lines, air pump lines etc. The only computer in this is the loose nut behind the wheel.

Running without the egr tends to make an engine detonate. Unless some tinkering is done with the timing,mixture or octane.

Actually, The egr opening incorrectly makes the engine lean out which will cause detonation. disabling it will do the opossite.

Exhaust is used as a buffer to slow combustion chamber flame speeds and lower combustion flame temp. This reuces octane requirements and lowers NOX production. A cooler combustion chamber is also less prone to detonation. Exhaust gas can not lean the mixture. It contains no oxygen.
