I have a 1993 escort that is auto trans. I want to flat tow it 150 miles. I understand it will damage the trans if I do this because the brarings wont be getting fluid. Is this right?

Second, my father in law is a mechanic and said its not going to hurt it if I leave it idling in N while being towed as the engine turns the transmission oil pump. Its a $500 car so its not the the end of the world if it gets damaged but I want to get some second opnions before I do this tomorow after church.
Thanks and any help will be appreciated.

...Adjust the idle a little faster, that way you can tow 60-65 MPH and engine will get extra oil pressure.....with engine running, put trans. in neutral....150 mi. = 3 hrs.....may cost you an extra $3 in gas.....

I would stop a few times and start it up and rev it up a bit. Also put foot on brake and put it thru the gears.
That just to get all the fluid to splash all over.

Frankie,

The auto tranny's's wet clutch plates, bearings, and sprags HAVE to have a constant flow of oil to lube and COOL them.

The thing I haven't figured out... he's worried about hurting the tranny, so it must be working, and the engine apparently RUNS, so why not just DRIVE it??

Not too easy on a FWD as he would have to drop both Rzzeppa joints to uncouple the trans from the engine.

You can only flat tow with the engine running and keep the speed down. The engine turns the pump but at too high a speed it could still do some damage.

as in flat tow I mean tow with all 4 wheels on the ground with a rigid tow bar.
Thanks

Rent a car daully there only about $25 or so and it will save you problems in the long run. That way you don't have to worry about the tranny and you will be safer also.

Well most U-Haul places have them and you could find one of them on your way and they can be picked up and droped off at any U-Haul place
