metal garages vs. steel-framed poly-covered

Hi gang,

I'm looking for pros-cons on metal garages vs. rigid-frames types that are covered in clear or colored heavy-guage poly. Not an "instant garage" type temporary kind. This would be sonotubed into the ground and have an asphalt or concrete floor. I've heard this type referred to as a "pony wall" type structure.

I'm in the snowbelt (20" yesterday), so that is a consideration.

Also, would a well-levelled asphalt floor have any price advantage over pouring a concrete slab? Total size would be 45x30'. No plans for car lifts etc. that would require concrete.

Do you ever get hail where you live? If so, you do not want poly. I have seen the results of this and it wasn't pretty...

I don't know much about the poly buildings, but I think you would better off with a concrete floor. Paving asphault stays flexible, it's made to be. If you use a floor jack , the jack will sink under the wieght. Any oil or gas that gets on it will disolve the binding material. Evan if the poly goes away, you still have a nice concrete pad.

yep yep!! I can attest to that, look at the road in fron of my drive, its got jackstand marks all over it from someone (heh). Its alot softer in the warm sun tho. Concrete is tough stuff and theres a reason they use this over asphalt for flooring..
Repeated oil soakings makes the asphalt break apart and become useless... Ask my friend about his drive where I parked for years when visiting in my leaky car. They reasphalted it anyways because they are well off financially... haha
