I thought was smart and ordered an 8" Dewalt Heavy Duty Bench Grinder (model # DW 758) through Amazon.com. It came delivered to the house for under $100.00 shipping included.

It runs smooth, with plenty of power but I just noticed what I thought was a scratch in the pretty yellow paint.

No such luck. Closer inspection shows the cast base developed a full crack running along its entire length almost. I had it temporarily but securely mounted with C-clamps before deciding on a permanent location.

Now I have to play the return/warranty game. I know, its made in China but c'mon.... only used it for one minute then she cracked. Anyone else seen this before with Dewalt grinders ?

my first thought is that you didn't have it clamped down correctly if you just used a couple of c clamps. make sure the surface you mount it to is flat and all the ears are touching the surface before you bolt it down. i run a lot of dewalt stuff and have not had any problems with any of their drills, saws or screw drivers. their 14.4 volt screen guns are rated at close to 1000 ft/lbs torque and will run a 3 inch long 1/4 lag screw all the way through a 4 x 4 with no problem.

1000 foot pounds from 14.4 volts! That should run an 1 1/2 diameter lag screw through just about anything! I got to get me one of those. LoL Dave

If ye ain't got a local store to make it good, rather than ship it off and wait I would just clean the paint off and JB Weld it up. Then fergit about it.

Take it to a Dewalt service center. Give them the opportunity to make it right.

I just dropped it off at the local Dewalt Service Ctr. Repair guy said no problem. He'll order a new base and replace under warranty.

He agreed that the cast base is not beefy enough for the heavy motor and that it lacks any additional metal underneath the bolt holes to help spread the load when tightening the hold down bolts.

I suppose it's just another thing to be aware of with imported tools these days. These things are not meant to last so treat them softly.
