Hello, I have a question for welding professionals. I'm currently cutting the spacers on an offset disc to get the blades closer together. How can I identify whether they are cast steel or cast iron? All I know is that they are a casting. When I touch it with a grinder I get a short cluster of sparks ( a little more than when I touch a packer wheel, but not as much as much as when I grind steel tubing). What else could I look for? Thanks.

First you cannot cut spacers , then they are all castings. Steel is alittle differenent from cast, if you can't tell the difference call a professional

Not a welding pro by any means. Touch a known steel part to your grinder. The sparks will be yellow and rather long. Most cast steel will spark similar to regular steel. I usually can weld cast steel with the same techinque as for regular steel with good results. Cast iron will have sparks that are noticeably redder and shorter. The ends of the sparks from the cast will have a "starburst". I would try nondestructive means to disassemble the harrow. New parts may be hard to find or hard on the finances.
