I need a good reasonably priced electric winch to drag old non running combines on to my trailer. The trailer is 32" high and the incline is 10 ft long. They usually roll pretty easy and weigh from 5000-8000 lbs.

I will probably use a snatch block with a cable to double the pull. Will a 6000 lb winch be plenty?I'm getting too old to use a come-a-long.

Last year at a sale at Reading,KS I watched several guys use electric winches to drag old tractors on to their trailers and they made it look so easy. Some wouldnt even roll and the rear wheels were sliding.

I have a 9000 lb Desert dynamics that I bought in 1983 and use a snatch block and has loaded many many tractors and everything else, but always wished I had a 12000. Sometimes it's just not quite big enough. On the other hand my son traded for a 8000 ramesy and it seems to have more power. It's kinda like building a barn you can't hardly go too big.

It's best to purchase a 12,000lb electric winch if a 6000lb load is being hauled. And then use a 2 to 1 pulley to slow the line speed by 1/2. What's the hurry when loading to save 45 seconds? Slow, safe and steady wins. Even if the machine runs, it's usually better to winch it up onto a trailer anyways. Every year the gene pool gets cleaned up by drivers flipping tractors over/off trailers while loading/unloading.

Hi Blaine. I have a Ramsey REP 8000 on my trailer, wouldn't want a smaller one. This one doesn't have much more amperage draw than their smaller ones but a lot more power. I bought it a few years ago at the Northern store in Des Moines but they don't have it in the store anymore. I did a lot of looking and thought that was all the winch I would need and it wasn't much more money than a smaller one. I only have a 7000 GVW Mac-Lander trailer. That model also came with the roler fairlead, don't get the friction one or what ever they call it. Get the roler one. I also splurged and got the Ramsey mounting plate to mount it with. It is a heavy u channel with a place on the front to mount the fairlead. It all bolts to it, keeps everything square and lined up. Sure glad I used it, for me well worth the price. I had to go to Cliffs Truck Equipment to get it, had to order it. I mounted mine on two 6" channel irons across the tongue just in front of thr bed. I made a battery mount at the right side of winch. It is small angle iron with plates across the bottom. It holds one of those plastic boat-RV battery boxes. It added sme tongue weight but it worked ror my situation. It sure beets that come along. That model has lots of power if the battery is good. Get a big RV deep cycle one. The two hardest pulls were, I Loaded my 82 Dodge D150 after sitting for 5 years, sunk in and tires low.It grunted but did it. 52 Case VAC i bought in nothern Michigan. Sandy ground up there. Had to drag it a ways to get it to trailer. It was sitting in a garage,it burned down. Tires burned off, wheels wouldn't turn, had to drag it all the way. The stearing wouldn't turn, wheels were turned a little. Part of the way the guy was behind it pushing in reverse up the ramps till he spun out. The battery wasn't the best, need a new one. It is a Sears DieHard and there are higher amp batteries. It comes with 90' of cable. It has long leads on the controller. If you want to spend the money, they have a wireless remote controller. Thanks for the info on the Wards tractor. Good luck. Charley.

8,000 pound pull Ramsey or Warn. Snatch blocks are a pain. This size winch will usually do what you need done, in a straight pull. You'll still have the snatch block for "the hard times". These are not bargain products, but you won't regret buying a quality winch. Cheapo units leak smoke just when you need em most.

Should be plenty .... I've got a 2000# hand winch on my low-deck trailer and it's easy to load a 3,000# rolling load with it on a single line. If the tires on what you load are up it doesn't take much. The hardest part is how steep your ramps are.
