How do you determine the size of chain's?Does it mean the thickness of the link?

Yep! I messed up one day and told an engineer that small chain would do to hold the 8" flex pipe on a trailer - 5/8" or 3/4" or so - I was thinking the *length* of the links. I showed him with my fingers how long the *links* oughta be - SMALL stuff! Next day he came in with 500 plus pounds of anchor chain! The links were 5/8" diameter - I guess we saved money on the chain binders, though - heavy as that stuff was, just the chain weight held the flex pipe in place!
We all learned - chain is measured by the diameter of the metal that forms the link.
It's been almost 20 years and we still rag each other over that one!
