O/T obviously.....Septic System Froze Up

Hi, heard all the deals with using welders etc to thaw frozen pipes....what do ya do if the drain side of a septic system with plastic PVC pipes is froze up? Dug out the end and ran a 40-50ft snake up the outlet, no change....run it down the cleanout and it hits solid about 25ft down..... .got the garden hoses inside and thawing out to try running one of them down there.....anyone have any other suggestions to get it flowing again?

What a bummer! Neighbor used to have that problem under driveway many winters. They kept a wood fire burning over driveway for several days before got it going again.

Pumping water into the frozen spot will melt the ice.Its best done on the discharge end.There are steamers available,They run steam against the ice.Orangeburg pipe is NG, it flattens out over the years.Septic lines under driveways can freeze 6 feet down here in maine.

Are you sure it is frozen? Possibly with the ground freezing it might have expanded and crushed the pipe. I had that happen to me a few years ago, but I had orangeburg pipe that the frost under the driveway had crushed. I know that's what happened because I dug it up myself and there was over three feet of frost over the bad spot. It also happened after a couple of extremely cold weeks and of course the coldest day of the year. Hard to believe that it would freeze in the middle of the run and not closer to the end where the cold air hits it and ice builds up, usually septic tanks make enough heat to keep the lines clear.

Same thing happened to me Saturday night. Drain line from house froze up, and while doing laundry, the toilet overflowed water into the front bedroom. Fortunately, I have a mobile home, so an hour with a torpedo heater under the house solved it. I feel for you, and I hope you get it thawed out soon

Please be extremely careful with a torpedo heater under your house. I am a firefighter. We had a trailer house burn down this winter because of this same reason. I know of another one about 1 hour from here that burned last week when the homeowner was thawing pipes with a torpedo heater. Not a good idea at all!!!

I always try to be as careful as I can be. I never put the heater under the house. I remove a piece of skirting and place the end of it about 24" away from the hole and just let it blow the hot air in. And, I only use a new one that has a good baffle in it, and only burn it on Kerosene to lessen the chance of carbon monoxide poisioning. And, I always check it every few minutes to make sure none of the surrounding material is getting too hot. I've seen three houses burn up here in the park, and fire is one of my biggest concerns. Thanks for taking an interest, though! That's something you don't see very often in my neck of the woods.
