have a taurus in the shop with an overheating problem and no heat in interior. checked thermostat, also checked heater core lines. all open. very little flow from engine to heater core. removed water pump, impeller is thin as paper, looks like a flat saw blade. aparently aluminum block reacted with water pump and ate the impeller. thought you guys would get a kick out of this one, heres the photos

A ford thing ? I changed the water pump on my soobie at a bit over 200k, was still fine on the impeller but the seal had started dripping.

"Don't make them like they used too."

What the water pumps or the crooks?

About 10 years had the same condition on a Taurus. This one did not overheat , but very little heat for the passengers. It had close to 170,000 miles on it at that time. Also put a NAPA pump on it that had been turned in for warrenty. According to the claim it leaked. Trouble was the sealed bag it was in had never been opened. Pump was still on the car when we traded it in. Some of that wear also occurs in some hevy duty blocks like the coolant is almost a "mild abrasive". J.

Not to many years ago most all impellers on water pumps where made with cast iron. I can still remember buying rebuild kits for them along with mechanical fuel pumps. hmm : .. "throw out society" ?

I had a 64 Rambler V8 that had a split plastic impeller. It would heat to boiling in 5 minutes.

Back in my auto body time, with some mechanical work, too, i was told that comes from the coolant flow and dirty water (coolant) from not being changed. A guy i knew made lots of money from changing every water pump on every car that came into his shop! He had a gadget that showed reduced coolant flow, allegedly from damaged impellers! Most of the ones he replaced were still in good shape. He was a crook of the first order! And, the old glass sealed beam headlights would get a slight dark spot inside, above the filaments. Caused by heat and the burning of the filament. He had a 55 gallon barrel of lamps he had replaced-said they wouldn't pass inspection! I bought the barrel full for ten bucks! They lasted for many years!
