Anyone ever used the Bernzomatic cutting/welding torch kit? If so, ~ how thick can it weld? I dont have a big need, but could use something like this for some small jobs that pop up.... would it do repair work on a garden tractor deck... say about 1/8th thick?? TSC has it for 'bout 50.00

If not the Bernzo, anyone have experience w/ the Victor Torch kit??? I'm sure it would do everthing I need, but would rather spend 50 bucks as noted above 'cause this outfit is about 300.00

Thanks for your thoughts...

If you're going to weld steel, you must use acetylene. Go ahead and buy a decent oxyacetylene rig and be done with it. You're looking at around 500 bucks by the time you buy tanks, but this is a one-time purchase that will last a lifetime. You will find you use it a lot more than you expected.

The bernzo torch will not do much and your oxy bottle will be empty. Don't waste your money. put in another 100 and get one of the porta torch.it will come with a cutting torch and brazing tip. I use mine all the time on small stuff or if i need to take it with me it's easy to tote around.

I have a Bernzomatic set that I purchased about 12 years ago. I use standard bottles for oxy and acetylene. I needed a new tip for the cutting torch a few years ago and found that victor had one that fit it. I have had no problems with this $100 outfit.

satsop - What kind of a setup do you have? I was referring to a Bernzomatic kit that looks to have the 14oz cylinders (it uses mapp gas). Do you have something larger? ... & if so, where did you get it?

I just need something inexpensive/easy to use. I do not do a whole lot, but just might if I had the equipment...

Thanks for any help...

I tried one of those little Bernzomatic Mapp/Oxy torches. I hated it. Returned it back to the store. Save your money and get a real cutting torch outfit.

Also to save some money you can start with propane instead of Acetylene. Just takes a different cutting tip. But a 20lb propane tank is lots cheaper than an acetylene tank.
Only thing is you can't weld with propane, cut and braze/solder fine though.

The little bernzo oxy cylinders only last a few minutes and are not cheap. I can get a tall farm oxy tank refilled for what 2 of the little bernzomatic tanks cost.
