Interesting. Been playing with the electralysis method of rust removal. It works, but not always as I expected it to. Not seeing any gains over vinegar soaking.

The battery charger seems to be the big oddity.

When I use my little 2/6 amp charger, things percolate along, at a rather slow rate. It gets most of the rust off, but not all of it.

Hook up my big charger, the one that goes up to 200 burst, 100 amp continuous, and I don't see any change. The charger works, and if I touch the leads, it blasts its usual spark show. But hooked up in the bath to the anode and cathode, there's no increase in current flow or electralysis. No foaming, no change in the offgassing of the parts, no improvement in rust removal, no change at all.

Did find a neat way to shock yourself with 12 volts I didn't know about. If you have your hand in the bath and grasp the anode, you sure can feel the current flow through your hand! And of course I had to explore the battery chargers with this. With the big charger cranked up, I get no increase in the current through my hand, the pain stays the same.

I'm not getting the spiffy clean results I see posted on the web by other folks using this method, and using battery chargers.

I use the battery charger and some laundry soap, I think its laundry soap, its something just like it for laundry. It seems to work pretty good. I let parts sit for about 2 days and its pretty much clean. Id do the battery and soap trick before grinding. Its easy to grind too much. Sand blasting works pretty good too.

I"ve had good luck with electrolysis. A lot of folks use TSP instead of washing soda, but because of availability. I don"t think it works much more effectively. I"ve found that performance tails off after a couple of days because the anodes (I use rebar) get heavily coated and resist current flow. Then you"ve got to pull them out and wirebrush them off. I use a DC power supply (25-30 volts) instead of a battery charger. I heard of a guy running an electrolysis tank off of a DC welder . . . . bet that would cook quickly! Using extra TSP or washing soda doesn"t help performance. Good electrical connections and clean electrodes are the most critical factors.

I am using washing soda. Just dumped in, but more than 1 tsp per gallon. I did dump more in because at first the solution would make my hand all slippery, but fairly quickly that effect faded.

I'm not getting nearly the foaming and surface scum some of you folks are showing. Just a silver dollar sized blob on the top of the annode. The bubbling from the parts is tiny, usually along a seam, and I'm frequently getting about as much off the anode as the part itself.

It may be an inadequate anode issue, as I'm just using a single section of rebar. And it does get all rust coated. Wiping it off while running is how I discovered the shocking capabilities of the system.

Didn't even think of ohms law. Which takes me right back to that rust and such. Just a touch of resistance, and it all goes to heck.

I'll go back to playing some more, better armed this time. Thanks again!

Forget about the rebar, get some flat steel so you can get some surface area, the more square inches the better as a general rule. I have been using ruined f20 hoods. The rod style anodes don't offer much for surface area and as soon as a little orange crud covers it the game is over.

Seems like I read somewhere that you could use stainless steel for the anode nad would have less of the mess using plain steel.Anyone else have information on this?

Using Stainless Steel makes some very unhealthy byproducts you don�t want around, stick to junk steel

I guess I'm with you. I used washing soda and was mildly disappointed with the results. It did take off the red rust but left black depositis in the pits. Supposedly these will come off with mild scrubbing but no such luck on my parts (brake pins for my Allis B). Ended up sandblasting them anyway. Higher current setting had little effect (see others' comments about soultion and annode size). Small battery chargers burned out after 2-3 days and the big ones are cost inefficient (sure did spin the electric meter. 3 days added $20 to the ill. Wife not happy.). After looking at the time and cost, unless it's a detailed part and hard to come by, I just use oven cleaner to depaint 90% then sandblast. I save up a bunch of parts to sandblast at once and I have a pile of free sand so it wokrs for me.

Now, if someone can tell me how to overcome the the black gunk, we might have to try again..

Nolan: a few thoughts: Washing soda is Sodium Carbonate. I use Clorox Oxy-Magic, which is essentially washing soda with some other stuff added. Nothing special about it, it's just that I can't find washing soda locally, and a little label-reading led me to this stuff, which works fine. Read through the labels on a half dozen powdered cleaners in your local supermarket's laundry aisle and it's a safe bet at least one will be primarily sodium carbonate, even if it's not labled "washing soda". As others have mentioned, this not a fast process--it's going to take a few days to show results. Wipe the gunk off from your parts and your electrode a couple of times a day and just let it bubble away. The good news is that the results are great--it's not an abrasive process, nor is it chemically destructive, so your parts will come out clean and free from additional scratches or nasty chemicals lurking in the pits, just waiting to lift your fresh paint job.

Nolan, go with as much surface on the anode as possible, and find the washing soda, 1 tablespoon per gallon of water. Also be sure your battery charger isn't an automatic one. If you're doing it right, you will see the reaction stating in just a few moments.If you can't find the washing soda, yell and i'll send you some. I buy enought that out Kroger stocks it by the case. Remember, it isn't a speed thing. Best results take a day or two. I usally leave mine a couple of days, but scrape the anodes every night to keep things working at their best.The high alki (sp) willl also loosen paint as it works on the rust, but you must give it time to happen. The beauty of this method is that nothing is damaged, it stops on its own when all rust is gone, and you have nothing that is harmful when you're done.

Do you suspend your parts so they aren't touching anything? I looks like in you pictures that you just have them laying in the tub. I understood that the part couldn't be touching anything, I'm probably wrong though.

If it's small I will hang lots of pieces, but most cast pieces or large pieces I just lay in what ever bucket or barrel I'm using. As long as you don't let them touch the anode things are happy. I did an Allis WC frame Rail several years ago simply by cutting a ditch by the shop with a turning plow, lineing it with plastic, instant 8 foot bucket! Worked great.Sometines you can only do half at a time and then swap ends.

One of the real benefits to this system is that you can take a completely rusted piece bolted together, rusted beyond belief, connect a wire to all pieces, put it in and in 90o/o of the time you will be able to unbolt the parts with no damage. These nuts unscrewed with hand pressure and a pair of regular pliers and you can tell just how bad of shape this plow frame was. third party image

I like just as big an anode as you can get, much larger than the rusty piece square inches wise, and it needs to be cleaned off periodically. Maybe add a little more washing soda. the closer the two parts are the more amps you will draw. It does behave like it is line of sight, but if you run it a little longer it will overcome and get into the crannies.

How would a24 volt charger work .I happened to have one that was used to charge two wheelchair batteries,but havent tried it on electrolis.Also how about an old golf cart charger (36volt). Anyone tried these? I might later on. Any thoughts on whether they would work safely?

I've been playing around with it myself. Can't find washing soda around here, so I used regular Arm & Hammer laundry detergent. That was not real effective, so I added some Simple Green because I had it, and noticed a slight difference, but still not real effective. Got to thinking that it is all about the conductivity of the solution, and I knew that salt water was more conductive than fresh water, so I threw in a handful of canning salt. Now I am not recommending the salt until further research, but the handful of salt moved the meter on the charger up from about 2 amps to almost 10. Further research will have to wait for warmer weather because the 5 gallon bucket of solution is now frozen.

My recommendations in terms of preference:

Washing Soda (Laundry section of some stores)
Lye (Hardware store)
Baking Soda (Grocery Store)

You want the alkali environment that you would not get with salt. Automatic dish washer detergent would work better than laundry detegernt since it is largly washing soda.

I really don't know what kind of environment I ended up with. I started with the laundry detergent, added the Simple Green to it, and then added the salt to all of it. It was fairly effective in knocking the thick rust off some un-painted cast iron parts.

What chemistry are you using? Washing Soda, Lye, or something else? The conductivity (inverse of resistance) is highly affected by the choice and amounts of chemicals. Lye will eat off paint as a side benefit (it is the major component in oven cleaner). Be very careful with lye it is highly caustic (rubber gloves, goggles, rubber apron).

I use washing soda. Works slower than lye, but is not so hard on the skin. Does not aggressively eat paint.

If you are using little or no chemical, try adding some, stirring well, and then checking current. I would not recommend going over a few amps however. More chemical = more current.

The current flow in this application is determined by the conductance of the fluid between the electrodes not by the rating of the charger.

The conductivity of the solution can be played with by adding more alkali crystals to the solution, also the Anode and Cathode areas play a role in controlling the current. Adding more electrodes and placing them closer together will increase the current flow.

It has been a long time since I have played with this but I can remember that it is a not a fast process and it that it does not always clean the part 100%. You don't want the process too fast, low current and a slow removal is good.

I would recommend you do a "Google" search on the electrolysis rust removal process and read some of the many good articles you will find on the process.

Ohm's law says that current flow is based on the voltage and resistance. The resistance between the part you are cleaning and the electrode is the same whether you use the big charger or the small one, and since both chargers produce very close to the same voltage (probably around 14-15 volts) there isn't going to be any big difference between the two. As long as your electrolysis bath doesn't have low enough resistance through it to require more current than what your little charger can provide, you'll not see a difference. Now if you were to increase the voltage..... .
