Hi city farmer,

Several years ago I was advised that most people end up being unhappy with Lincoln plasma cutters because of the rate that they go through consumables. I think Hypertherm and Thermal Dynamics brands are the industry standards.

I agree with Hobo on the advantages of oxy/fuel cutting except where a lot of cutting of very thin material is expected, as he says. Plasma also has the advantage of being easier to use, much easier to follow a soapstone line with, and offering non-ferrous metal cutting capability.

Where I work, welding students seem more interested in learning to be expert with oxy/fuel cutting equipment than do the metal artists. Nobody, however, cares to take the time to make any of the many jigs, guides, holdoffs, pattern cutters, etc. which can increase the functional capability of oxy/fuel to much higher levels.

All the best, Stan

If you want to cut 1/2" steel, get a plasma cutter rated to cut at least 1". You get what you pay for with a welder or a plasma cutter.

A friend of mine loaned me one that would cut up to ¾” and one that would cut up to 3/8” after using them I as soon use my torch. I have learned a lot reading on how to set my torch from the fine folks here and ‘bout got to were I think I kin do a better job wif the torch on steel. But the plasma izz hard to beat on thin stuff. That’s my take and maybe I don’t know zackly the rite way to use the plasma set up. It did save me from buy’in sum’in I would not be happy wif and he will let me use hiz if need be. Now I will invest in a good Band saw cuzz my elchepo has bout had it. The reason I like the band saw izz its so clean to use unlike a touch or a plasma cutter. I kin wack off a piece of steal and shut up the shop and leave but if I shoot fire I have to hang out fer awhile to make sure theirs not problem wif a fire. Recon it depends on what yer needs are but I have determined I kin do wif out one.
