Well, this is the third day I've posted on tools and I'm not really hung up on them but I thought these were interesting.

Was in Lowe's and the Kobalt tools were next to the checkout counter I was using. There was a type of rachet set I hadn't seen. The sockets had 12point(I think) teeth cut on the outside of the socket which fit into a corresponding hole in the center of the rachet. The top of each socket had a round hole in it corresponding to the diameter of the bolt the nut that size socket would fit on. Idea is that you can drive nuts down a long threaded rod with the ratchet without having to use a deepwell socket or switch to a open end wrench.

I also was in a local tool shop that sells all top quality tools. (those in upper SC may be familar with Mac Fullbright Tools in Spartanburg, SC) Anyway, he had on the counter a new type of SK rachet set. The sockets were cut to fit spline fastners. Each socket will also fit Torx , square, and regular hex fastners in the appropriate size. Some of you guys may be familar with this but it was new to me.
BTW, I've always considered SK tools to be near the top in quality. They are priced accordingly.

Kobalt wrenches, sockets and ratchets used to be made by JH Williams whish is owned by Snap On. Four or five years ago, Lowes gave the Kobalt contract to Danaher. Kobalt tools were not the same as Snap On labeled tools and Lowes was threatened with a lawsuit over this. Since JH Williams is a "Snap On company", some Lowes sales people were telling customers that Kobalt was the same tool as a Snap On, but the tools were not made on the same machinery or with the same quality steel.

That sounds like the Armstrong Eliminator line of ratchets. They work great, but unfortunately, Armstrong no longer makes them. Glad to see someone else has picked up that idea. Yes, Mac Fulbright has about anything a person could want. I would love to see what all they have in the back room..

Guy in my hood is an ex Snap-On tool man. He told me Kobalt was made by Snap-On and it was the same qualiy steel and machining that the SnapOn tools are. He said the first Kobalt tools said a Snap-On company but the Snap-On dealers got mad and they removed the Snap-On name from the packaging. I'm just repeating what I was told for what it's worth.

A word of advice: What ever you get, make sure the socket is retained well by the ratchet. A dropped socket, at the wrong time, makes for much gnashing of teeth, and if it drops inside an engine or tranny, with no way to fish it out--really exasperating! I have several Craftsman ratchets that won't hold the sockets, and if it weren't for the cost of replacement, they'd be out back in the woods! (Or a twenty mile trip to the store!)
