GFCI problem

I have a 20 amp circuit on 12 ga. wire running to a 20 amp GFCI in the bathroom. The load exits the GFCI and powers a light switch and an exhaust fan (fan only no heater). Nothing else on the circuit. When I plug in say an electric heater it runs fine. If I leave the heater plugged in and also plug in a light or drill the heater stops running. If I wiggle the plug they will both run. (This GFI is new). Bought one of those GFCI testers and first time I plugged it in GFI tripped. Reset it and tried it again and tester lit up as correct wiring in both receptacles. I noticed the test light on the GFI itself was flickering when I plugged in tester. Here is the weird part. If I put my ear down close to the GFI it is making a beep, beep, beep noise? I just went down and shut off the breaker and figure it is a bad GFI? I never heard one make a noise like that before. Wire connections are tight. Do they go bad inside ever even in new? THanks

Think their reliability factor about 50%. Electrician since before they existed. Fan will give you inductive spike and sometimes trip. Lot of callbacks for this. Local inspector used to refuse to okay any GFCI feeding a motor operated device.

People have trouble running fence chargers on gfis.I have seen too many failures in them.Lots of parts to go wrong in them.Lightning strikes on the power line will kill them.Another saftey device that causes problems.

Thanks everybody. I'll get another one and try it. Think I will buy a different brand. This one was called Designers Edge or something like that I never heard of before. I'll get a Leviton next time. Thanks again.

I had three bad ones fresh out of the box last summer. Did a lot of head scratching before I had figured it out because three COULDN'T be bad. Must have been a bad batch.

Bad socket in the GFCI or bad connection in the plug on the heater ?

If you have to wiggle and if tripps at odd times I would try another one. Never had a GFCI bad out of the box but have had some not last very long. Ken B
