Hylomar gasket sealant

I've been using Hylomar as a gasket sealant in the last many engines that I've rebuilt. Over 10 years of service and it's doing a real good job. I like the stuff but can't find it anymore. NAPA never had it. PepBoys is where I've always gotten it (only reason I'd go into a Pep Boys store) but they don't carry it anymore either. I think it's a British product but licensed to Permatex for sale in the US. Anyone know where I can still get it without sending to England at $49 a tube?

was once the only stuff to use on Mersedes(sp) and VW diesel head gasketts.

"Hylomar 101" is used extensively on alot of the new small Deere engines. It is used as a stand alone--- no gasket-- in a lot of applications..So if you have a Deere dealer nearby they "should" have some..

I`ve never used Hylomar but it sounds an awful lot like Loctite 515 anerobic sealant. 515 works extremely well as a replacement for cylinder base gaskets on chainsaws.

I hated the hylomar stuff but maybe what dealer had was always old too. Was a waste of money once and never used it again. The gray or black permatex and other new ones they have work well as do their old line ones of indian head shellac, aviation sealer, & hi-tack.

That was good stuff . We used to use it when I worked at the Jag dealers . All the manufacturers just went to silicone sealers and the Hylomar fell out of favor . Plus it was expensive !

What I've found that works very well is the Permatex Grey silicone sealer. It really bonds to the metal/gaskets well and doesnt leak . It is superior to the blue , orange and other silicon sealers . When you apply it you can feel it bite into the metal surfaces . A lot of the others just slide across the surface .... you know that stuff isnt going to seal . Its about 5 bucks a tube , not bad .

Another good sealer I've found is at the motorcycle dealers . Yamabond , or Kawasaki Bond works excellent . Kind of a greyish white goop in a tube and it really seals well .

Hope this helps some as a substitute .

Years ago I used Hylomar...Great stuff..I bought it from a company in Cleveland , Ohio named PAI [parts associates inc.] I don't know if they still handle it or not , but it's worth a phone call..I haven't seen a salesman since Roger Allen in the 80's..
