I need to relace the rear pinion seal on my pick up, Ford with a 10.25 rear end. Can anyone tell me what size the pinion nut is and will I need a jaw puller. I have done this before on an old truck I had. This one is a lot newer. I'm not sure if it's the same.

I have been successful knocking the yoke loose by striking it from the back with a brass drift. I learned that trick from my factory 1973 Corvette manual. I've done it twice on that car and it worked both times. Less mess than a puller.

This is from experance talken here if the pinion seal is leaking on a 10 and quater ford rear you have other problems starting . what is happening here is the CRUSH spacer is colapsing and you should replace the CRUSH spacer also along with the yoke . Then you have to crush the new spacer and set the rolling preload of the pinion . On my 88 ford one ton i was having problems with mine and it ended up costing me a ring and pinion as i pulled a 28 ft. gooseneck and every time i would back a load up it would cause the crush space to crush just a bit and allow the pinion to get loose and just tighen the nut only added to the problem as it crushed the space more and threw the setting out of wack . The way i fixed it was when the rear end went to lunch i made up a solid spacer and this took a ton of work to get the bearing preload of 28 to 32 inch lbs of rolling preload then after that was set then i could tighten the yoke nut down tight and that solved the problem i did 16 other fords this way as everybody is having this problem . They went to this set up for ease of set up at the factory as ya just put everything together torque the nut to 365 ft. lbs. ( i think that is the torque setting ) to get the spacer to start to crush then you check rolling preload with out the axels in and tighten down till ya get the 28-32 inch lbs . When driving foward all the stress is pushing foward and there is no problem but when ya have to force a load in revers you are pulling against the ft bearing a crush spacer and this can and will make it crush more then the yoke starts to get loose and wobbel and this is what takes out the seal.

I just did one on a late model F250 at work. The nut on that one is 1 7/8 and I used a large puller to pull the flange off. I bent the slide puller i tried to use first. The nut wasn"t that easy to get off either.
