Oh, other breeds will do that too. I had a redbone coon hound that would. The more quills stuck in him, the madder he got, and the more he would "fight" that porcupine....looked like he had a "Santa" beard more than once...'course I think the dog pictured here has him beat! Bad as that looks, it's the quills you cant see in the pics that are probably the worst- in his tounge, inside his mouth, down his throat, etc.

I have helped out a few dogs that tangled with porcupines, but none of them had a tenth as many quills as that guy has. Ouch!

I had my best luck cutting off the quills with side cutter pliers and then twisting them some while pulling them out.

Hope that isn't your dog--I feel sorry for it!

My doperman did that twice and my chow once only not nearly that bad. My Grandpa said to make a paste of baking soda and water and smear it all over the quills and by morning the quills would be like rubber and pull right out. Never tried it though. Took the dogs on each occasion to the vet's and he sent them on a little date with prince valuim and started plucking.
Makes me hurt just looking at the picture, D**n!!

Snip the ends with sissors before using the pliers. Let's the air out of the quill.
