O/T Dogs and pills, suggestions?

Brought Lucy dog home from the vet's yesterday. She had to have a little surgury to see if she had a bowel blockage. Turns out it may have been a displaced or twisted intestine. Anyhow she is a 4 year old mixed up black lab and the vet gave me 3 medications to give her 3 times a day. 2 antibiotic capsules and 1 is a pill that is dissolved in warm water and injected down her throat with a small syringe. The syringe game is no problem. However the capsules are, I've tried about everything from wrapping them in hamburger to coating them with peanut butter. Thinking hard about a balling gun. Wifey seems to have no problem, her fingers are longer so she must literally shove the capsule down Lucy's throat.
For me though, the little stinker cleans the capsule off and spits it out like a bad chaw. Any suggestions for getting these down her? Wifey is not always home.

Used to have a lab that needed two types of steriods twice daily to control Addison's disease. I cut up hots dogs into 1 inch lenghts and shoved the pills inside the pieces, problem solved.

I was told to stick the pill as far in as you can then hold the mouth shut then BLOW on their nose. I guess it takes their breath away and they swallow.

Most of my dogs have always liked to catch things I threw to them, especailly people food items. So any time I have had to give them pills, I would tear up something such as pancakes in managable sizes and then toss the pieces to the dog, one by one, but fairly fast. What the dog doesn't know is that I have put the pill in one of the pieces and it is down the throat before she ever knows it is there. This has worked for me every time I have tried it, but of course my dogs were experienced at playing the catch game beforehand.

On the other hand, I am not sure it is possible to give pills to a cat...and it sure can be dangerous to try!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions they are all useable (especially the one about having Mama do it). Mama made a bunch of pork ribs in the crock pot all day and I've been feeding Lucy along with a fork, from a list of "people food" the vet gave me until she gets back on her feed. The ribs are not on the list but they melt like butter and arn't spicy. So while I fed her pieces of these I put her pills on the fork and she never saw them coming.
Funny how people call dogs dumb. Who's the dummy here? She's laying there on her blankie with another over her and her corn bag under the blankie and being fork fed. Hmmm... spoiled brat!

One of the guys stated it below. Put your hand from the top of the snout and with your fingers and thumb, tuck her lips over her teeth..she will open her mouth, put a little pressure of her lips against her teeth, trust me, she will open..tilt the head back a little and with your other hand , put the pill as far back as you can in her throat. Close the mouth, keep her head tilted back and stroke the throat until she "licks". She will lick when she swallows. Should take you all of 10 seconds at most. One fast movement and the job is done.

I agree with the cheese. Periodically we have to "cheese" the dogs for one reason or another. Another thing that helps is to make sure they work for it.

Do you want a treat? Huh, do ya, do ya, huh, do you want this? Huh, huh?!

I find if they're all excited about it, they'll gulp it down without analyzing and sorting it first.

I've had good luck with cheese. Roll the pill up inside a slice of the Kraft singles, give it a little squish to keep it in the middle, and the dog will take it without knowing...

Whole pills work will with bacon grease or peanut butter.

Hi Steve,

I use tetracylene for a antibiotic for my Lab and he don't like them very much. I take the capsuls apart and pour the medication inside the meat (a small bored hole) then he can't feel the "pill" and will choke them right down.

Our other Lab/mix was apparently taught to chew his food 100 times before he swallows and this even works on him. I've never seen a dog chew his food like this one does.

Open the top jaw of the dog�s month. Then stick the pill in. Then with your other hand rub the dog�s throat back and forth. Then she will have no choice but to swallow it. Works ever time.
