I use Skype and it works great for me. Call anywhere in the U.S. or Canada for the $30. a year. Overseas call are very reasonable too. You can also call computer to computer for free without signing up. Maybe Skye doesn"t work well for some, but so far I"m happy with it.

My BIL has that system, and I hate when he calls me because the call is in and out every time and I can hear about one word out of ten. I'd want some sort of guarantee that they will restore your old service for free if they can't provide service as advertised, and that they'ed let me out of any long-term commitment for service. He's stuck with lousy service for the next two years now. I'd go with a cell phone.

Let me caution you that if your connection is not high speed, these calls do not work well. I used to try to make calls when I connected through my telephone line and it was a terrible connection. Now that I am high speed I have not tried because I can make these calls on my cell phone. I would try to find one you can try first before I would spend any money on it.

In most areas with a land line, when you call 911 they know where you are calling from. I don't think that works with the system you are talking about.
