What do you guys suggest to use for a portable heater to use in a two car garage on an intermittant basis when I have to work on the car in the winter. I only have one electrical outlet out there. Propane, kerosene torpedo, quartz etc? Don't need to heat up the whole garage necessarily, just keep it warm enough in the area I am working.

I use a small 1500 watt,120 volt ceiling mount electric heater with a fan and it has its own thermastat built in the switch. Mounted it in the front of my shop at a 45 degree angle and pointed down toward where I work the most. Removed a light bulb, screwed in a plug in adapter, screwed in light bulb and plugged in heater. It doesen't take much to take the chill off when shop is insulated, I work in shirt sleeves at 55-60 degress. This shop is 24x24 welding shop, I have another wood shop 12x24 and another 24x36 truck shop, same heater in all but largest has 2 as I like the heater blowing air where I am working. The 2nd two shops I hard wired heaters in when I built them. I don't turn them off I turn them all the way down when not in there, probably 40 degrees. I find dampness is worse than cold.

If you don't mind waiting for a half-hour or so for the garage to warm up, a kerosene heater is a good way to go. I have a 23,000 Btu/hr Dyna-Glo heater, and it does a good job of heating up my insulated 2-car garage. It's quiet, doesn't stink and is quite safe.

A torpedo heater will heat your garage faster, but they're loud, they stink, and you have a very real danger of carbon monoxide if you don't have fresh air coming in.

Another option is a sunburst heater that attaches to a 20 lb propane tank. No electricity, valve controls output.

A reddy heater works great. Can burn kerosene or diesel. Even has a thermostat. Heats up fast but make sure to open a door a little to get fresh air and vent fumes. It will still keep you toasty. Propane is OK but causes a lot of moisture. Kerosene or diesel is a drier heat. Kerosene supposadly has less fumes than diesel but is a lot more expensive. Hope this helps. Dave

I put in a natural gas unvented wall heater the fall after we bought our house. One of the smartest things I ever did. It heats up the garage well enough to work in shirt sleeves all day and I do not have to worry about gases killing me off as the heater has an O2 sensor in it.

It's been getting down to around 10 degrees overnight and garage is insulated.

I have a kerosene torpedo heater I use when necessary. It puts out alot of heat fast to get the garage warmed up. I then turn it on and off as necessary. O.S. I made a short extension cord with a switch in the middle so I didn't have to unplug it all the time.

it's prolly a good idea to unplug something that has flammable material in it.
