I have a lot of troubles with Re-Mans. Especially from Advanced. I had to replace 7 of the dang things in 3 months in my 1986 Chevy Silverado. The Chevy was in really good shape. The cables, battery, and alternator were all ok. I was only allowed 6 starters from advanced, but I know the guy, he could have gotten fired, but he gave me another one anyways. I'll buy other things from advanced like air fresheners, btu I will not buy starters or anything like that from them. JUNK!!

I had to put a reman starter on the 92 Corsica that we have. It's now had the third starter on it since Christmas 03. The first one lasted about eight months, the second one lasted until last September. I have no idea how long this third one will last. It's a good thing that it has a lifetime warranty, because I would be a lot more upset about it than I was. When I replaced the second one; the car had also sat the most part of a year while I was in Korea. Needless to say the parts store got an ear full and then some when I came back with the second starter. I told him to either give me my money back or give me a starter from a different manufacturer. He tried to tell me that I didn't have any warranty but had to back off on that argument when I produced the reciepts for the starters.

I have to agree with Centuar on this one. I'd always much rather fix the original one. At work they never fix ,just get a rebuilt and go on.Some last, alot don't ? just a gamble from all the parts houses. Even have some trouble with the AC Delco rebuilds, but far less than the others. This may all change too as GM is changing their suppliers all the time.

The problem I see with all the rebuilts I've seen lately is that they turn the commutator and don't cut the mica back below the level of the copper bars. If you don't cut the mica it eats the brushes up. I don't know if it's planned failure or incompetence. If you look in a new one or orignal the mica is below the copper.

If I remember correctly from my days working at the rebuild shop. You undercut generator armatures. No need to do starters.

I heard that before. My observation says otherwise but I am still watching.

I have found that the cheaper rebuilds from some of the large auto parts stores are put together with no lube on the bushings. They also apparently use the cheapest parts they can find since the solenoids and starter drives don"t seem to last very long.

If you still have the original,do not give it up to anyone.Have it repaired.I worked in these places.(Also applies to a carburetor).Starters can often be cleaned up and lubed and often that alone will make a big difference. Most starters give trouble because the brushes have become too short and have thereby lost good contact with the commutator.Often the bushings need to be replaced to hold commutator concentrically in relationship to the pole shoes.CENTAUR

I bench tested the old one before I turned it over for Core. Seemed like she worked fine. But in the Truck she acted like the Bendix was bad.

I've re-built a few Chevrolet/GM Starters, with new Brushes and Bushing, ect. Haven't done one in about 20 years. I suppose they're still the same.
I was in a hurry ,so I just bought the rebuilt.
Think next time, I'll go to NAPA...

Depends on who did the job, If everything worn outside of new specs is replaced with first quality parts, it will be a good one. If the outfit replaces only the parts that have totally failed, and replaced them with the cheapest avalible parts, then you will not have a very good starter.

Buy only from a company that has a good reputation, and be willing to pay them a little more for a quality product.

Bought a rebuilt a little over a year ago from a Big A Auto Parts Store. At first it worked fine, sounded a little different from others, but worked. After while, she started dragging! Sometimes it works good, other time sluggish. Have a new battery. I heard through the grapevine that this guys starters have a high return rate! Another thing, my original Chevrolet Starter wasn't shimmed, so I didn't use the shim provided with new starter.....

My nephew runs a rebuild shop---have the old ones done right by a good shop and you will have a good starter.
Or take it to TIKI boy he can do anything.
