working on a custom build that has a small block chevy v8 going into it. starter is going to be in the way in it"s stock location. will have an adaptor going from chevy v8 to a ford top loader tranny. looking for ideas for relocating the starter. could also connect off the front somehow just not sure how. could also put starter in adaptor ring but would have to get starter to turn backwards or use two gears and have it reverse that way. any ideas out there???

Did the starter origionly bolt to the engine block or the bellhousing?

Adapting a Ford transmission to a Chevy shouldn't require relocating the starter. What is the interference problem? Are you trying to use the Ford bellhousing with an adapter between the bellhousing and the engine block? If so, it may be easier to adapt the Ford transmission to the Chevy bellhousing with an adapter plate. That way you don't have any starter issues.

Or, does the starter hit the frame or suspension in it's stock location? If that's the case, then I think the only alternative is either to move the obstruction or one of the mini aftermarket starters. Never seen a Chevy starter in any location other than stock.

I will still be using the stock flywheel for the chevy motor it's just it hits the frame(large casting) and it's not really something that I want to hack into. Friend has a small starter he is going to let me use for mock-up purposes and see if it will clear.....still appreciate all ideas just the same.

Have you checked into the small "mini" starters that're built for racing? They mount in the standard location but are much smaller and might clear.

Also for racing they make a starter/bellhousing combination where the starter mounts facing the rear on the rear of the bellhousing. Doubt this'd work for ya tho since they require special reverse idler gears in the bellhousing and won't work with a standard-diameter flywheel....but might be worth checking out if you're a good fabricator.

If you need a reverse rotation starter you can get one at any marine supply place, as they use them in twin-engine boats where the engines run in opposite directions. A cheaper alternative would be to have a starter rebuild shop rewire one to make in turn opposite. Remember, you'll also need the reverse rotation bendix as well.
