Kohler 20 hp twin rebuild or replace?

Looking at a boom lift that has a kohler command 20 hp v twin. The engine smokes and seems to lack some power. What would it cost to rebuild this engine or would it be better to replace it with a new one? This engine will run on gas or propane would a new one be able to do this or?? Thanks

If you go to Smallenginewarehouse.com they have price lists for new engines, B-S, Kohler, and the jap motors too. If you want to go with a new one.

just bot a Bandit chipper with 300 hours on 25hp Kohler, looked at an identical unit with 841 hours on, mine has 2x the power of the other one but both got er done

rental yard guy said they can go well over 1000 hours before rebuild and then its rings and gaskets, as long as block is good they do not replace the engine

if you want more power, 25hp should fit or 30hp Wisconsin alledegly bolts right up

Is it blue or black smoke? Blue is oil, but black is too much fuel. Might only need to adjust carburetor or replace air filter. Need to know more before doing anything.

Pull it apart and get a gasket kit set of rings and a tube of valve lapping compound. Should take you a day to do a nice job of going through it. Replace BOTH connecting rods while you are in there. A bad one will window the block. Not funny.

Depends on who is doing the rebuilding. If you do it your self, you might be able to do it for as little as $150.00. Some of the command engines have a nickle-silicone cylinder liner and are hard as anything I have seen, and there will be no wear in cylinder just the rings get worn, I had one we rebuilt that had 3000 hours on it and all it needed was rings, this was a CH25 though, another thing with a command is the head gasket on either cylinder can blow and cause oil consumption. Aslo have seen valves get burnt and this will cause oil consumption. do a cylinder elak down test, make sure what is wrong before you start spending good money on something that could be simple.

I just had one rebuilt[pistons,rings,valves,etc.] Cost was a little over $700.
