I currently have dial-up and sick and tired of it. We have a small town phone provider that has a slow rate so called "high speed" internet service and they charge the highest cost for any other companies real "high speed" service along with a hundred & sum buck set up fee.
The problem I have is being in the middle of nowhere, there is no wireless towers and any dish set up or other services require use of the phone line. The telephone company block out any competition from using their lines, so I cannot get a decent product for a competitive rate.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what I can do. Ive called so many services and when they test the lines, they say they cannot help. Even a dish that needs a phone line for maintenance is being blocked.

Thank you.

Any cell phone towers around? Most carriers have some form of digital service. I was in the same boat. No cable, to far from wireless, stuck on dial up that maxed at 28K. Sprint put a cell site about 1/2 mile from me. Got on their EVDO system and have almost exclusive use of 700MBS. Good lord I love this thing now..... .

I didn't know you live by New Ulm! You desrcibed the phone co here perfectly anyhow.... ;)

Same situation, but I do have a wireless setup with towers around. Fellow was out today to check it out, he said I'll have issues with the grove (which I was expecting) and figures we can make it work but best to wait until the leaves are on the trees. So, 3 more months of dialup....

I hear a lot of good things about Wildblue from those that have no other access to the world, there is a lag delay as everything has that 1 second delay, and as the satilites get full they tend to throttle back the speed on you. But everyone who writes about it says it sure beats dialup, & my understanding is it works without a phone line?

Wildblue is available through our (Meeker) REA, although we are not on it. Was surprised that they got into that business, but they are in much more than rural electricity. Don't know if other REA's provide it. We're quite satisfied with DSL from our phone company, just waiting for them to expand with cable tv- in many of their towns now, but not through the rural areas.

Don, I was in the same situation you are in and broke down and went to Direcway Satelite internet several years ago. I had Direct TV and now use the same dish for internet (had to upgrade dish). The company has since changed to Hughesnet. It was a little pricey (about $125 to upgrade and install) but the improvement over dial up was unbelievable. I got spoiled real quick and would never go back. It is much faster and more enjoyable. It may not be as good as some cable services but it was my only choice if I wanted to get away from dial up. I now spend my time looking at things instead of waiting for sites to load and pictures to download. Hughesnet advertises as being available anywhere in the U.S. if you have open sky. I have that alright. I think it was worth the cost as I spend a lot of time on the internet. It is always on when the computer is turned on and no more busy phone lines.

Don,

I don't have wild blue , I have local wireless,
but the boys that do the wireless also do the wild blue service and installation . The fellow that works on my computers has wild blue because
he cannot see the wireless tower. He likes the wild blue and they do not have to
have a phone line to work or anything else. Below is a link to wild blue .

I've had WildBlue for a year and two months. No phone line connection required. I'm well satisfied.

It's fast, although I haven't actually measured download speed. It's not as fast as RoadRunner cable but close enough to suit. Uploads, like sending an email with a few photos, are slow. All ISP's that I've had have slower upload than download, but WildBlue is unusually slow. Not a problem for me.

It cost $500 for the dish and installation, and the service is $50 per month. The only other satellite service I checked into was $600.

It's internet only, no TV. I was told that TV requires a separate dish.

It's been through two short, violent hailstorms with 3/4" stones and a few good blows without interruption of service. It's always on.

Service got a little spotty after 10 months or so and the dish had to be re-aimed/pointed/whatever it's called. I called WildBlue about the occasional breaks in service and was told the service call would be $75; I had to make the service appointment with the installation company. The tech spent 5 minutes with the dish, called his office and was told there was no charge because my place only required a short detour when heading back from another service call. WildBlue had already charged to the credit card. I had to arque to get the $75 charge refunded.

Equipment warranty is one year.

I was told by the installation company to put the dish on a yard pole, not on the roof because of possible leaks, movement of the house, etc. The pole would have added $100 plus one more obstacle to mow around. I ask the installer and he said they put them on roofs all the time, so that's where it went.
