Parts cleaner solvent

Below is a thread on what people are using for a cleaning solution for a parts cleaner. I purchased one of those 3 gallon cleaners with the small plastic electric pump. I noticed some fellows were using mineral spirits as the cleaning agent and am wondering about the safety of using this type of solvent with the electric motor. I know mineral spirits has a flash point that would make it safer to use than kerosene. A water based solvent is not really an option, as I live in Wisconsin and this would make it unsatisfactory in the winter. What are your feelings on using mineral spirits with this cleaner?

I use varisol in mine,get it from my oil distributor.Similar to mineral spirits but cleans alot better.

I use mineral spirits with a quart of ATF for every 3 or 4 gallons. The ATF helps slow down evaporation, is high in detergent, and seems to make it easier on my hands. HTH Jf

Anyone tried Biodiesel? Has toxicity of table salt and is known to be a very good solvent.Might jell at low temps could cut with kerosine or? I will be changing over to bio when I switch out my tank. Mark Anderson

i use mineral spirits. ive seen some guys pour a quart or two of oil in it to raise the flashpoint,but i dont and havent had a fire in 36 years. own my own safty clean type setup.a bathtub on a barrell.

Mineral Sprits is all i have used for years.Iam
sure you have herd of Safety Kleen it is a company that services parts washers in repair shops and the main thing in there cleaner is mineral sprits & they also have other things mixed in with it.

I am well aquainted with Safety Kleen, as I was a supervisor for the stamping plant that made the drawn tanks that were used on their systems. We made thousands of the tanks, and we also used Safety Kleen systems in our plant. However, since they came in and changed the cleaning fluids, I never paid any attention to what they used. From the good replies I have received, I think I will just go ahead and use the mineral spirits I purchased for this purpose. Thanks for the replies.

I agree with the others.. I'm pretty sure the cleaning sump pumps are sealed in much the same way an electric fuel pump on your auto is.

Just think of all those electric motors in the fuel tanks of the newer cars. They"re 12v DC, but will still cause an arc if not engineered properly. I haven"t heard of any problems with them, but then I do lead a kind of sheltered life. I would be more concerned about external hazards. Just my observations.

I've used mineral spirits for 15 years now and haven't had any problems with any type of explosion. The motor in the fliud is a sealed motor and hasn't bothered. There is a fused link in the lid incase of fire. The heat is suppose to melt the solder and close the lid to snuff it out. Probably the worse think about mineral spirits is any possible health risks of having your hands in it. my 2 cents...

I think I would rather have my hands in mineral spirits than in the commercial grade solvents such as Barsol.
