Mronin all, I had 2 propane tanks filled this weekend fou use with a 55k BTU bullet type heater.
hooked up heater to the first one it ran about 5-10 seconds and they heater started "burping" then the flame got yellow and was shooting out of the end of the heater about a foot. shut off the bottle and it took several minutes for the flame to go out. Regulator and hose were completely iced over. hooked the other bottle and ran fine, no ice or irregular flame????? Any ideas what could be wrong with the first bottle.

A bunch of us on a dock shared a barbecue on shore and we had trouble with turning the gas tank on too quickly, icing the regulator, and spoiling supper. Over several weekends everybody had a go at turning the tank on slowly and getting it to light, but eventually we just left the thing on until the gas ran out and another one was bolted in place. Once we all learned to shut it off at the grill, the problem was solved.

Maybe the freezing happened for the same reason your problem occurred. High summer temperatures expanded the gas until it interfered with the regulator.

Nothing can clear a dock of a bunch of teenage sun bathers quite as quickly as a 5 lb propane tank when it gets a little too much sun and lets go a blast of propane. 20 pounders are less touchy.

I agree it's too full. You might also be able to run it with the valve on the tank cracked open just a wee bit, enough to where it will let a little of the liquid pass and flash into vapor. Also make sure the tank is setting perfectly level. Hey, sounds like you might have gotten more gas than you paid for, but probably not enough to justify the hassle though.

If the tank was indeed overfilled, when it warms up, being inside, near the heater, the safety valve may blow as the liquid expands.

That would be NASTY... with liquid propane spewing from the safety valve.

That's why they went to the "OPD" valves with a float, so the tanks can't be overfilled.

Is your tank still equipped with the old "POL" valve? I didn't think any company would refill them anymore???

as far as i know its th new style valve it has threads male and female. I had it filled at a Flying J truck stop, surely they would have said something?? Would it be safe to "drain" some by taking the tank outside and carefully releasing some through the heater regulator/hose with the heater disconnected. if not what do I do?

Take your tank out side away from any ignition source and open the 10 percent valve. Which should be a screw head on the side of the main tank valve.
Just open the 10 percent valve enough to see if liquid or vapor comes out. You will know the difference. If vapor comes out you ane not to full. If you get liquid leave the valve cracked open until just vapor comes out. The float may have stuck and allowed the tank to be over filled.

no, setting upright, could I drain a little off outside by unhooking the heater from the hose and opening the valve. bottle has new style valve and will not release gas with nothing hooked to it.

Don't really want to tell you when I am not there, but probably. The fact that it iced up tells me that it was liguid for some reason.

..... .or that the tank wasn`t properly evacuated when it was new to remove the air before filling or perhaps no ethanol is present in that tank to keep it from freezing. My BIL who`s family is in the propane biz tells me that it is common to add ethanol to the tanks for this reason.

J, Open the small screw on the side of the valve with a straight screw driver and that will bleed the liquid off.
