Hey fellas, I replaced the kitchen faucet in my friends sink with a newer, much fancier one. The problem with the old one was that it leaked within one year of installation, and the discharge tube became so stiff, you could hardly move it side to side. I replaced it with a very nice Peerless unit ($200 faucet on sale at $89.99) with a pull out sprayer and hand soap dispenser. It's the single handle, lever type faucet. It's been only 3 months, and the tube on it has gone stiff as hell as well. The entire faucet assembly turns side to side when you move the tube. I torqued down the clamp screws to hold the unit a bit tighter, but I know I just bought a little time before it starts happening again. Does anyone know what causes this? Hard water? Is there some kind of remedy for this, like teflon seals or something? I'm kinda pi$$ed about it, since I keep getting blamed for installing it wrong, when the only installation is two screws and two hoses. I am really sick of crawling under there, and it's useless to try to explain that I haven't assembled it wrong because, as usual with a woman, the conversation only goes one way. I'd pull the whole damn thing out and go back to two separate taps if it were mine, since I'm starting to think it's a problem inherent in the design of every single handle faucet.

I agree with the others that you want to try to lube it with a water resistant lubricant. If it stick again i would recommend you put a filter on ahead of the faucet, you may need to get one for hot water as well as cold. The hot water filter is designed especially for hot water. Or the other route would be to install a water softener. First try to determine if it is water deposits or faulty faucet.

I was a plumbing mfg rep for 12+ years and in the business over 35 years. By far the best 2 handle faucet I've seen is a Grohe (made in Germany) and the best single handle seems to be American Standard ceramic disc cartridge faucet. Delta is over advertised and overpriced. They might have been a good faucet 80 yrs ago, but there is much better stuff out now. (You would not believe how quiet the Grohe is) John

Had the same problem with a new Kohler from day one. Finally bought a Delta and have been very happy. Delta's don't cost that much and parts are easy to find and cheap.

remove the spout only,if the "O" rings are not tore up just use vasealine and put it back, done it for years,As others have said it could be the hard water..... .Jim in N M

Hard water will definitely trash a faucet in short order, and the new faucets seem to be more susceptible. But do you know for certain that your friend has hard water?

Face it. You are a man; you must be wrong. Better start buying those faucets in bulk.

I've had the same type brass Peerless faucet for 20+ years, I just keep rebuilding it. No soap dispenser or spray hose. The water is hard and eats away the internal parts. I use 220 and 400 waterproof paper to do the flat area where the O rings ride. The pits are getting so deep that the O rings wear out in a couple of months. May be time for a new (plastic) faucet. I was at the plumbing supply a couple of days ago and watched an old guy shell out $186 each for two Delta single handle faucets.

Roger, I'd blame hard water. Pull the spout off and grease up the orings with vaseline or a silicone grease. I have two of the single lever Peerless units, and need to do it ocaisionally..... .

I've got two Deltas doing just that. I've been into them a few times...the discharge tube rotates on two O rings and they seal out the water from leaking. Over time, the O rings start to bind up and you have the problem you described.
I've contacted the Co and they're real good in sending me o rings and other stuff but they can't make the problem go away. I've clean and greased and it works for a bit.
I got to the point where I had nothing to lose so I took a Dremel with a sanding disk and ground down the O ring sealing surfaces a tad. Grease it up and it works pretty good now. It's been a few months. I don't know how long the fix will last but I hope it does.

If you sand down too much, you'll not be able to seal the water from leaking out. Some care has to be taken to do it evenly and just enough.

You figure out a better fix, let me know. My wife understands the nature of the problem and she doesn't break my chops at all.

Hard or acid water will corrode or build-up deposits in the swivel type (single lever) faucets.

Mine ususally last only about 3 yrs before binding up and eventually leaking at the swivel joint when the water is turned on.

Once and awhile I take the mechanism apart and put in new "O" rings and grease it up real good. Usually works for another year.

Actually I replaced the single lever with the standard individual hot and cold valve type.

What is the water pressure? It sounds like the ceramic seals, they don't like over 70 lbs.Water cuts grooves in ceramic causing it to leak, then it is a matter of time before it gums up everything & nothing works right.Might need a pressure regulater on water line.
