Question i have is about a "tri-star" 230 ac/dc welder 230 volt single phase, model # 110-114.
This was made by Century Welders of MPLS MN.
way back when ????
Has been a good unit for years but suddenly no current output, small striking arc and sounds as if its under a welding load all the time.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram, parts list etc or the web site of where it came from.
Can find lots of we sell centurys but no sites that offer info on them.
Tks for all offers

You have a shorted diode in the dc section. The dc section is rated at 140 amps but uses a pair of 85 amp diodes.I fix them in the back of pick ups to avoid lifting them.Dont try to weld with it, you will cook the transformer.Usually one diode is shorted.

Thanks i have opened it up and found one diode open both ways[ visual], will check the others
with the meter, but i have what looks like a rectifier unit out of a alternator bolted to the metal frame work where the diodes mount[ stud side], with the 3 leads connected under a bolt in the same material?
i wonder if someone has done a mod prior or this is normal for the age of the unit.
No i don't try welding with it, gas powered standby works yet.
tks

The welders I have worked on have stud mounted diodes,1/4 stud mount. This puts them at 85 amps max.Alternator diodes are usually 35 amp and 100 piv ,NG for welders.Disconnect wires from one side diodes and check with your ohm meter.Ten ohms one way, open with reversed leads.Use the largest diodes you can find. The higher piv the better.Diodes are usually stud positive some are stud negative. The Century welders I have worked on didnt have an ac dc switch so the diodes were in the circuit full time.

Others may confirm or dispute, but I think that Lincoln now owns the Century line.
