since we are on the topic of splitting stands I always here of everyones plans but I would also like to see a picture of the stands so that I could get a good idea of a set I could use to split tractors on my own when I am not working at the case IH dealership.

jpl, I was at my local used tractor parts place last week, they had a real neat set of splitting stands. at least te front section was!!! Quite simply it was an IH 560,or larger tractor, Frame Rail bolted the the tractor being split. With the larger porition that bolts to the flywheel/clutch housing being used as a foot to support the wt of the engine.
This looked simple enough. They used the A-frame crain to lift the motor sligtly then slide the motor and frontend forward. Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

Use pipe stands, whcich you can rent if you can`t borrow some, so that you can adjust the front half of the tractor so that it will remain in the same plane as the rear. Use a rolling floor jack under the rear and as you use a wheel to roll the back have someone else pull on the jack to help pull and steer.

Be mighty careful, if not using the required stands! That durn machine will turn you into a scared, mad, amateur mechanic, if you don't use those stands! Once it starts to "FLOP" you'd better run! Cause it'll get ya down and jump on ya! HARD! How do i know this?? I worked as a mechanic's helper, in a Ford Tractor dealership, and saw first-hand just what can happen, when procedures were short-cutted!

Well Said...My Guardian Angel has had to put in overtime more than once...One thing for darn sure, if the tractor has front weights on it; get them off first..Even with the proper stands in place, I had the front end of a new 7000 Allis flip forward onto it's nose..A was pulling it apart for a short block replacement. Anouther tech was approaching me from the righs side of the tractor to tell me it was lunch time..I turned to him as I pulled the last bolt fron the side rail,,,Crash...that side rail went straight up and missed me by two inches...Pure luck..
