hey, i need an older truck that i can farm with and play with muddin and off roading. my family is partial to chevys and i like the 80"s era of chevy/gmc trucks. but one of my friends has a "76 f-250, i dont think its a highboy but it has big tires on it, 360 motor, and has alot of power. i like the style of these trucks anywhere from 1973 to 1979. i really want one but i have no idea where i"ll find one (in MA) or how rare they are and if i can get one for cheap.
any info you can give me is appriciated.

I have a 1988 Ford F250, 302, 4WD. Runs good but needs transmission work, the tranny is out and it needs a clutch. It's a 5 speed standard. The body is in pretty good shape and very little rot. You (or nyone else) can have it for free. I live in Litchfield County in CT. Thanks, Bruce

For about the same money you can buy a 1987-1992 F-350 1 ton 4x4. They come with a Dana 60 front end and a corporate 14 bolt rear end that is a lot better than the Dana 60 that comes in the back of the 76 F-250. They are better trucks than the 76. I had the 1976 F-250 hi boy and it was ok. I now have an 88 F-350. F-250 had a heavier duty gear drive transfer case that is probably a little stronger than the Borg Warner 1356 chain drive unit in the F-350. Problem was, the F-250 transfer case is divorced from the transmission so you have three driveshafts on the truck and the front one is very long. F-350 has much better engines, 460, 351, and overdrive transmissions weather 5 speed or auto and only has two driveshafts that are much better than the hi-boy design. Also the F-350 has a much better steering system by having a steering gear box instead of that horrible power cylinder assist nightmare the old hi-boy trucks have. The later trucks have better electronics, alternators, powersteering pumps, electronic ignitions, fuel injection. Comparing the two is very tough. The 88 is light years ahead of the 76. 76 was also extremely prone to rust. 88 is not much better. The frame on the 350 is noticably beefier than the 250 when you get under there and look. 88 F-350 sits higher stock than the 76 hi- boy does stock. Also the 88 is very easy to install lift and big tires. You could run 35's stock and 40's with a 6 inch lift. My advice, find a good 1988 F-350 1 ton 4x4 with a 351 auto. Spend about $3000 bucks. You will have all the truck you ever need and still be able to repair it quite easily. Good luck.

D-17 man: Spent the day using a 1979 F-150 4X4 with 351 auto regular cab & 8-ft bed. (and a D-17). The Ford is for sale; only has 52,000 miles; spent most of it's life in a farm shed or hauling hay to the cattle. $2000. Problem is-it's in western PA. Have any good old tractors to trade? Wolfy.

Had good luck with fords, but that 360 is the biggest peice of JUNK I ever had. The last 360 went out at 83000 miles, put in a 351w and trany. It was still running at three hundred and sixty four thousand miles, dam good for a gas motor.

78-79 F250 is arguably one of the best trucks ever built. Only came in long bed. Super axels and transfer case. When the 4x4 magazines look for the best 4X4 of all time it allways comes up in the discussion.

Back then trucks were used for trucks and not used by a woman to drive to the dance studio. Now they are driven to create a rich bravado image and at the same time have a soft and quiet ride. They are not used much anymore to haul goods and pull heavy trailers. Throw in a need to cut and shave costs to the bone and they end up with powertrains just aren't built quite so tough. If you want a real truck you have to upgrade to one of the heavier duty models.

D-17,
Those old fords are tough trucks...just make sure to get one with the solid front axle, not sure when they changed 77-78-79 maybe. get a standard as those old 4X4 automatics are expensive to rebuild. The 81 and older 3/4 or one ton chevy's are hard to beat with a 4-speed standard. Chevy 350 probably best motor ever made and 2/3 the cost to fix than 360 ford which was bad about burning valves and motorcraft carbs are tough to get right...just 2-cents...
