There is one not far from me, I was there last week. Many catalog items are not stocked in the store , but they will have separate mailed sales ads for the store often with better prices on the sale items. As mentioned by others, it is a good way to see something up close before you buy it, I also have went out there , looked something over and decided it wasnt what I wanted. The other thing is I usually get a few items while I'm there that are a good deal besides what I went there for.I havent ordered from the catalog since the store has opened as the mail order no longer has free shipping.

No way for the HF needle scaler head to fit on a standard pistol grip air hammer body. I bought a complete one today to go after a bunch of rust. The needle head attaches to the air hammer body by latching on to a big lug welded to the side of the body. The head is spring loaded and you twist it on to the body. BTW, they are on sale for $49.95 and they work quite well.

They don't have "everything" that's on the web. The stores aren't big enough for that.

What they do have is a good cross-section of the items they offer on their website. Many things, not everything by any stretch of the imagination.

What's nice is that unless you're in the same state as the Harbor Freight mail order, you don't have to pay sales tax on the mail order stuff! Even if you have a Harbor Freight store in your state! They've got it set up so that the mail order and stores are two separate companies somehow.

I have been in several, generally they stock what you see on-line

many times I thought something looked good on-line but changed my mind when I saw it in person in the store

works kinda like a mail order bride

The one in Lubbock, Tx has nearly everything that is in the catalog, which should be about the same as the web. These are by no means top of the line professional tools, but for the average do-it-yourselfer they are pretty good tools. I have bout several different things and have not had a problem.

There is one about 60 miles from me and they seem to have a really good assortment of stuff. They run their own sales so you get more items on sale than just what comes from HF Central. I asked one of the employees if they would honor the sale prices from the main HF if I brought the catalog with me and he said that they would though I haven't tried it yet.

Yes they will honor the mail order catalog prices at the stores, just be sure and have the catalog in hand when at the check out and show it to the cashier before they start to ring it up. I did that on a irrigation pump, ended up costing nearly half what it was priced for on the shelf.

I was looking at HF needle scaler, just the part below the gun that's in the on line catalog. I heard some where that it would work with an air hammer. I went to their store and they do not carry them. I wanted to see it and see if it would go on an air hammer. I called their tech support and they told me it would not work with the air hammer. Soooo that is 1 item not in their local store that is close to me. Does anyone know if that needle scaler will work with an air hammer?

I bought mine at the Harbor Freight store near me and it worked fine on my air hammer. Just take out the chisel or whatever bit you've got in there, take off the spring (which just unscrews from a coarse set of threads on the gun body), screw on the scaler attachment and tighten down the two (or three--can't remember off the top of my head) set screws provided. Takes all of two minutes the first time, and less after that.

Alg: Here's a picture of mine. It has "stock no. 5541" on it, in case you can't read the tag in the picture. However, in looking at the Harbor Freight website, I can't find anything under this number. What I DID find was number 1109-4VGA (link below) that looks identical, though from the limited description I can't be sure. I know that by blowing up the picture I was able to see the same 3 (it is 3, not 2--couldn't be sure from memory last night) set screws that keep the unit from unscrewing from the air hammer during operation. I've got mine mounted on a cheap Northern Tool air hammer, though most of these are standard and it should fit other models as well. I paid around $15.00 for mine a year or two ago from the Harbor Freight store in Utica, NY.

Tim
That 1109 4VGA is the one I saw in the online catalog they said wouldn't work. Does it have a part that goes up inside the air hammer similar to the shank on a chisel or rivet set? If not too much trouble a photo of that part of the attachment would be nice. Apparently all the stores don't stock the same things since my store says they don't carry them and you bought on at a store. I also wonder why the stock # isn't the same. They look just alike.

ldg1002: Here's another picture showing the top. Had to stand it in a beer mug to get it to stand upright! The center shank protrudes maybe half an inch, and it just slides up into the air hammer and is held in place by the screw threads (visible on the inside of the attachment and the barrel of the air hammer--they're what holds the spring in place when the air hammer is used for "normal" stuff) and the 3 set screws. While I'm making no guarantees the one in the catalog will work, I do know from experience that trusting the harbor freight tech desk to know what they're talking about isn't always sound policy.

What damage do the set screws do to the threads on the air hammer? Seems like you would leave it on permanently. Does it need to be removed to change needles?

Slowpoke: I haven't noticed any damage to the air hammer threads, but I do typically leave it on permanently--I have a couple of air hammers, and I use the scaler enough to justify leaving it on one of them all the time. I was only making the observation that it's not hard to change if someone only has one hammer and has to switch back and forth. You don't have to tighten the screws to eye-popping torques--the main screw does most of the holding and the set screws are just there to keep everything snugged up, as these units by definition have a lot of vibration. I have not yet had to replace needles (they seem to wear quite slowly), so I can't say for sure how you replace them. I do know that there's a snap ring in the "top" (the end that attaches to the hammer) of the scaler unit, and I assume you take that out, pull out the "guts", and replace the needles that way, though like I said I've never done it. I certainly don't want anyone to get stuck with an attachment that won't work (or worse yet, a bunch of needles with NO attachment!) on my account--I'm just passing on what I know from how my particular setup works. If someone could check the stock numbers by physically inspecting the unit at a Harbor Freight store that would be great.

TimV, I was looking at the scaler on sale ($49) but it seemed way too long at 18" to use in close quarters. I'm waiting for the shorter right angle air hammer style to go on sale, but now I'll look at the replacement needle set that should work on a standard air hammer. Of course, the set is only advertised as fitting the HF scalers.

Yep, I'll bet it will work. For the price, I think it is worth taking the chance on. I am going to order it. My gun is actually a rivet gun used to set aircraft rivits. I have used the chisels that go with an air hammer in it, so therefore it must be the same size where the tool goes up into it.

Most of the common smaller size air hammers use .401 shank tools. If I were going to the store, I'd take my gun to check fit of the needle scaler.

idj1002 Oddly enough I was in HF today looking for A needle scaler.Toledo store didn't have the one you mount on A air hammer only the long one on sale for 49.99.That picture in that link is not correct.9.99 is for a package of replacement needles only as descibed in the caption.

Mark, Are you sure about that? That does make since because of the difference item # in this and what Tim bought. The tech support didn't mention it was only needles but as mentioned their support aren't the brightest light in the string.
