barn roof paint

my galv. metal barn roof from a distance looks good, but last summer I was up on it building an addition. when your close to it you can see rust starting to show on the galv. what paint do recommend for it. brand name if you can. also what kind of prep is needed before painting? most barns around here get repainted with some type of silver paint? I don't want alumiun roof coating because I want the snow to slide off.

There is a company in MN called Elastomeric Roofing Systems that has a product for this that awesome. We used here where I work to coat a metal roof that was leaking like a sieve and it sealed it up and it hasn't leaked for three years now. They did the work for me here and it came with a fifteen year guarantee. There WEB site it www.ersystems.com. Check it out.

Try www.zerorust.com I primed a cheap galvanized roof 2 years ago and never got back to top coat it and it still looks good.
I remember using a roof paint years ago called Storm King. This was made for trailer roofs. It was a fiberous aluminized paint in a 5 gallon pail. We mopped this stuff on steel roofs with an 8" brush and it sealed them up and made them a lot quieter in the rain.

snappie, Sittinng here at my computer I am trying to remembet the name of a Roof coaating product I used over 12 yrs ago on 2 small barns with very rusty corrigated sheetiron on them. So rusty they were etirely rust covered no galivanized left to see, at all. Also there were stress cracks, naail holes, pull troughs, etc, etc. This stuff came in 5 gal buckets, was jet-black when the bucket was opened, contains fiberious material too fill cracks, holes, etc. Use a drill and a HD paint stirer and 5 minutes later....Viola...pretty silver,fiberious roof coating. NO Prep required at all!
Simply use a HD 8 in brush, paint it on the roof in one direction, strokes, I worked top-to-bottom.
Sitting here telling you about it, I knew I would remember the name of the product, it is Moroso Roof Coating. Remember it has those fiberious materials added to fill holes, cracks and the like. These 2 roofs still look pretty good today, still they are light yrs ahead of where they are now compared to when I first applied this material. Hope this helps!

Texas Refinery Corp. makes some great roof products. We applied their Tex-O-Tropic coating on several of our tin roofs over 15 years ago and they are about ready to be done again.

Not cheap, but as my uncle used to say: "Only a rich man can afford cheap paint"..... ...

Shovelman, May I assume you use their oil too? What a product, Top quality, head & shoulders above all else.
I used their regular oil in our pickups, tractors, Combines, Grain trucks. Their Low-ash oil in our HD 800 MMs, 3306 Cats, 605 IH irrigations engines. We loved it My people bought it in bulk, semi truck loads.
Anyway just courious if you used their oils.

John,

We primarily used their greases, mostly the #880 Crown and Chassis Lube. I have never seen a non-moly grease perform like it. We ran a lot of large Cat excavators and keeping grease in the bucket linkages was always a challenge. We had excellent results with D-A Duraplex, until they dropped it from the line due to, so I was told, environmental reasons.

We tried several others (D-A Magnaplex, Texaco, Dryden, Valvoline, etc.) with mediocre results. Then this older gentleman from Texas Refinery showed up and gave me a couple tubes of 880 C&C to try out. It worked almost as good as the Duraplex, without the moly mess. If memory serves, it has a Timken OK load rating of 80 lbs, which is very high for any grease. We used it in many other severe applications with excellent results as well.

He also sold me the roof coating that worked better than anything else we have used.

About 12 years ago I used a RustOleum primer and paint and it has held up well. I used it on galv. metal on a building also. I hand brushed it on to get thick coats which was more costly, but like I said, it has held up. Link

Check with CEN-PE-CO Oil Company. They have a line of barn paints and roof coatings. Nothing is cheap but they have great products, been around for years, you can find them at www.cenpeco.com. Their toll free # is 1-800-553-1891. They have warehouses is Cleveland, OH., and Walcott, IA.
