Kohler engine on Miller Welder/Generator

Working on a buddies Kohler engine, 12 horse. There is a standing fog out of the carburetor at 1900 or 3600 rpm. Volume doesn't change much with rpm. Almost looks like blowby, but nothing coming out of breather just below carb. Some waftes away. Occasionally it will miss once and fog is worse. I have seen a high performance engine do similar but not like this. Mine of same vintage does not do this.

What is wrong? Intake valve not seating? Burnt intake valve?

305 chevys would do that with a bad cam. No lift or hardly any lift.

Looks like the intake valve is leaking or a valve seat is working loose.12 hp briggs have much trouble with this.They lose valve clearence when worn.Check valve gaps,I think you will find them too close.

I've seen Kohlers in 140 DEERES do that. Is it mis-firing, or running rough, or hard starting?

If NOT, it's probably more normal than some of the other posters seem to think it is. Once the airfilter is in place, you don't see the spitting, and the gas is continuously sucked back in and burned.

As the others said, check the timing with a light. (IF it has electronic ignition, timing is fixed.)

It certainly won't hurt to check the valve settings, either.

Trouble is, the tips of the valves wear indents into the adjusting screws in the tappets, so the feeler gauge will bridge the indent, and give a reading of less tappet clearance than there actually is. When the engine is apart for OH, the adjusting screws can be replaced, or re-surfaced in tappet-facing attachment on a valve grinder.

Those engines have ACR, which lifts the exhaust valve a bit, late in the compression stroke, making it impossible to check compressing accurately in the normal way.

You can rock the engine BACKWARDS against compression, and if a valve(s) is leaking, you will hear it in the intake or exhause.

Like I said, though, I have see the spitting of gas in a normal-running Kohler, so there may be nothing out of the ordinary at all.

Thanks for the replies.

It runs, so will use it if we have to for standby electric power.

The compression release is on the exhaust valve, so it should not affect this problem. The points are set at .020 per id plate so that should not be the problem. I am afraid you are right about the valve and clearance. At least you do not have to go into the innards to deeply.

If your talking about carburetor spitting a mist of gasoline out during operation Three things can cause this 1-Incorrect timing (point gap determines timing)2-Intake valve too tight 3-Compression release unit malfunctioning The k-Series kohler's can be timed with a timing light (there is a mark on the flywheel) The only way to adjust valves is to take them out and grind the end of the stem off til correct clearance is obtained. If it is the compression release unit then you have to remove oil pan then camshaft to get to it....

No doubt about it. You're about to get "up close and personal" with the inside of that engine. Probably some sort of valve problem. You won't know exactly what you're dealing with until you open it up.
