Lincoln SA-200 welder excitation

We have an older Lincoln SA-200 with the Continetal F-163 engine.

On initial startup, there is no output either at the 115V outlet or welder leads. If I run the engine full throttle and plug a grinder into the 115V outlet and try it a few times, it will excite and work fine, until you shut the engine off. Then you have to start all over.

We replaced the exciter brushes and cleaned up the commutator, also cleaned up the main commutator and brushes as well.

Once excited, it will weld all day, idle down fine and work perfectly.

Any help will be appreciated.

I had the same problem w/mine SA-200. Finally ended up raising the idle rpm and also make sure the bonnet is over the exciting end. Go to welders supply and tell them. They have a cure for that problem.
