can a variable frequency AC from, say a home made wind generator be stepped up to a higher voltage for transmission or are transformers only made for specific, stable, frequencies?

I"ve heard of using a variable frequency drive to stabilize and control frequency from alternative sources. (easier to generate DC for this) There is also the ability to step up or down voltage levels.

This might give you everything you need in one package with the only drawback being I wouldn"t want to run the output above ground due to lightning complications.

Transformers are generally designed for a minimum frequency and the use of minimum copper and iron to work at that frequency. Actually any ordinary iron cored transformer will work over a wide range of frequencies so long as the voltage is varied the same as the frequency. Which is exactly what you will get from your wind powered alternator.

The current rating does not change with the inverse of the voltage for any particular winding. The voltage ratios are the inverse of the current ratios, but the current rating depends ONLY on the cross section of the wire in that winding.

I've seen pole type 60 Hz power transformers used to replace audio modulation transformers in broadcast transmitters and they sounded fine. It would be optimum for the higher frequencies to use thinner laminations in the core to reduce hysteresis loss, but if you keep the core from saturating those losses won't be too bad anyway.

Your pole top alternator works best as three phase (or two phase) so your transmission transformer needs to also have the same number of phases. If it was me, I'd hold the field current constant and let the voltage vary, that's what will get the most power from the wind (remember the available power is proportional to the wind speed cubed) and do the voltage regulation at the ground after rectification. And I'd do that regulation with a switching regulator for efficiency.

I would suggest that you rectify the 3 phase output just like an alternator in a car or truck. Use that to charge batteries and let the batteries run solid state stable voltage and frequency inverters to run the devices you want to use. Just running the output into a transformer even if it works will give you a variable frequency and voltage.

Fundamentally a transformer will operate at any frequency. Different designs work better at some frequencies than others. Most problems will be with the application. Motors for instance require a stable input because the speed is frequency dependent.

I have been considering building one of the home built wind-
electric generators that I have seen on Other Power and those by Hugh Piggot of Scotland. The design is for one or two rings of rotating magnets running by a set of fixed coils, sometimes wired as three phase. As I don,t want the mill very close to the house and I need to figure line losses vs transformer losses, if the transformer will even work efficiently over a wide range of frequencies. I used to teach electricity/electronis over forty years ago ...all my books are buried by a recent move to the country. You have some ideas? Thanks, Leonard

Yes, this can work. Transformers are actually very efficient. At lower frequencies it's important to have an oversize transformer to support the same current but...

Fortunately at lower frequencies that means your mill is putting out less power (slower) so it can work fine. From the fieldlines.com forum at otherpower, do a google search from the menu to read about people doing this.

Yes you can but it's not cost effective, besides
as volts go up amps go down. not sure about the frequency thing.
