I have a Maytag dryer that just hums when you push the start button. I was advised that this is generally a bad motor or motor switch. So I replaced both of them. Same problem.
So where do I go from here?
Thanks for all your help in advance.

Thanks for everyone's help. It turned out to be an intermitent short on the neautral wire at the breaker box. It was loose on the bonding strip. So sometimes you would check voltage and it would be there, next time it wasn't.

How old is this dryer can you post a model # and you still get the same thing with a new motor . So the motor turns free? I seen it was gas,

Motor start relay or centrifugal start switch in the motor. Maybe motor start capacitor.

There are only a few things that keep an AC motor from starting. Too much load, bad starting winding, bad start switch/relay, low voltage. The single phase motor won't start without the start winding which provides a bit of a rotating field. Once its running it runs fine on a single phase field so the start winding is disconnected.

So if it only hums, something is wrong in the start circuit, or the load is too stiff, or the voltage is low. There aren't any other possibilities. Well, could be bad bearings in the motor that let the armature drag on the stator which the magnetic fields make worse. Or a bent motor shaft causing the same.

Could be the replacement parts are not good.

Have someone push the button and spin the motor pulley by hand and see if it starts and runs. Belt disconnected while doing this.
If you are not comforatable around electric wires when plugged in then dont do this.
I dont even want to recommend you do this in fear of an accident. Be carefull.
If you have a voltmeter then use it from motor frame to ground to make sure there is no voltage when the other person pushes the start button.
I often just rap on the motor frame with the back of my hand to test for a live short but I am use to live circuits (knock on wood) and dont recommend it to people that are not use to electricity.

The motor should keep running when started by hand and the button is pushed and let go
Get back to us with the results.

PS Dont touch any of the wires even if it is unplugged because the capacitator stores enough power to kill. YOu knew that , right.

The condition that you describe can be caused by one leg of the 220 circuit not working.

I have downloaded the Wiring Diagram for your model.

Are you sure that the new motor is wired correctly..??

Red Wire to Red Terminal
Yel Wire to Yel Terminal
Gry Wire to Gry Terminal
Blk Wire to Blk Terminal
Blu & Wht wire to Blue Terminal

I can send you this Diagram if you want.Supply me with an Email Address and it's on it's way.

One of the reasons the Maytags got a bad rap for reliability from Consumer Reports recently. I have Maytag products from 10 years ago, that are excellent, it seems Whirlpool is rated good nowadays. A shame how good reliable names turn cheap.

Is the "drum" free to turn??
Are you getting proper voltage to the machine?
My older Maytag has a felt bushing/bearing that the rear of the tub rides on. If it gets torn it can cause the tub to bind which in turn causes the motor to be unable to turn.

For some reason, it sounds like what evere the motor rotates (ie: Drum, etc) is bound up. Thus may contribute to the situation. Additionally, you could have a bad wire or wire connection to motor being bad. Without a model number is it hard to speculate.

You will get a hum if the drain hose has collapsed, it can't fill with water if it can't drain the last of the last wash, happned to me just before xmas. At first I saw a new dishwasher in my future
Hope it helps.
PS the drain pipe should be 20" off the floor or it will empty before its suppose to and your glasses will be etched white from the soap.
